The Earth Information Day is a valuable opportunity for exchanging information on the state of the global climate system and developments in systematic observation (FCCC/SBSTA/2019/2 para. 58). Data, services and information on the state of the global climate system are vital for informing decision making on adaptation and mitigation.

Earth Information Day 2020 provided an update on the state of the global climate in 2020, and its observation, and discussed recent advances in Earth observation technology and data processing to support decision making.

The themes and topics are guided by Parties’ submissions, and in consideration of the mandates and the wider context of ongoing work under the UNFCCC. The dialogue addressed two themes:

  1. Updates on the state of the global climate system and its observation (including imprints of Covid-19)
  2. Recent advances in Earth observation technology and data processing to support decision making
