UN Climate Change 2023 Highlights

This presentation summarizes key accomplishments by UN Climate Change in 2023, highlighting the crucial role of the UNFCCC secretariat in advancing global efforts to tackle the climate crisis and driving progress toward the Paris Agreement goals.

 

The deck condenses the main aspects of UN Climate Change’s mandated annual report and outlines key contributions in the following areas: 

Convening global action: Supporting the international response to climate change, bringing together stakeholders to address the global climate crisis. 

Supporting the Intergovernmental Process: Providing technical assistance to help governments meet their commitments under the Convention and the Paris Agreement. 
 
Building global momentum: Supporting the achievement of significant outcomes at COP 28, including an agreement to transition away from fossil fuels and enhance resilience. 
 
Global Stocktake (GST): Enabling GST consultations and concluding the first GST at COP 28 with calls to triple renewable energy and double energy efficiency by 2030.  
 
Loss and Damage fund: Supporting operationalization of the fund, with a historic agreement at the COP28 opening to operationalize the fund. 
 
Enhanced transparency: Preparing for the enhanced transparency framework (ETF), with 1,800 experts trained on the ETF and 2,000 experts completing trainings as review experts.  
 
Global Goal for Adaptation (GGA): Agreeing a framework for the GGA at COP 28, establishing adaptation targets related to areas like water, food, health, biodiversity or poverty.  

The deck also highlights the UNFCCC secretariat’s work and impact enabling inclusive engagement in the UNFCCC process, the practical support provided through Regional Collaboration Centres, as well as the global impact achieved through regional and multilingual outreach and the extensive operational efforts behind delivering COP 28.
