A critical discussion on the required conditions and capacities to
utilise blockchain/DLT for the speeding up of climate action
and upscaling the energy transition

5 December 2018 / 14:00 – 15:30

PCCB Capacity-Building Hub / RYSY Meeting Room 24 - Area E

The fulfilment of the SDGs and Paris Agreement goals require unprecedented scale and speed in the energy transition and in other key sectors all following a low emissions, resilient pathway globally. The energy transition driven by renewables entering an increasingly decentralised, smart (off)grid including sophisticated demand side measures and IoT devices should benefit from new, innovative technologies that can also contribute to speeding up and scaling up finance.

One of these technologies is distributed ledgers/blockchain that offers a disruptive approach that reduces transaction costs and provides a new way forward for renewable energy, helping to build a community of energy users and producers connected directly to one another. Blockchain could help to build trust in renewable projects big and small, without the need for a central authority or intermediaries. Digitalisation of assets and impacts; IT enhanced/digitalised MRV can also support climate action and ambition raising in multiple ways.

As with new technologies there is a learning curve to climb and plenty of technical, regulatory and MRV challenges. Megawatts are the easiest and most common measured output but they also provide relevant lessons for the use of distributed ledgers for the tokenisation of more complex and complicated impacts such as nega-watts (i.e. saved energy) and all kind of CO2/GHG reductions that will become the backbones of the newly emerging Paris Agreement Article 6 market and non-market approaches.

The event brings together practitioners from the renewable energy, blockchain/distributed ledger, climate & energy policy, SDGs and auditor/certification domains to address and critically review the blockchain/DLT progress up to date and the key challenges ahead.

On the event we will use audience engagement software to make it more interactive and obtain/share audience feedback.
