Showcasing Climate Action

Action on climate change by multiple actors has increased significantly in recent years. Consequently, it is becoming more and more important to engage with all stakeholders in the international climate process. As a result, the incoming COP 19/CMP 9 Presidency will be conducting a series of events aimed firstly at ensuring continued dialogue between Parties and representatives of relevant constituency groups and secondly at show-casing progress and achievements to date. Details of each event follow below. Additionally, the website will be updated as new information becomes available. Further information on each event will be made available in the Daily Programme and on CCTV.

Caring for Climate Business Forum - A Global Call for Climate Action

Caring for Climate - led by the UN Global Compact, the UN Environment Programme and the secretariat of UN Framework Convention on Climate Change - will organize the inaugural Caring for Climate Business Forum, under the themes:

  • Innovation

  • Ambition

  • Collaboration

Held in cooperation with the Polish COP/CMP Presidency, the Business Forum will showcase the contributions that business and investors can make towards climate action while providing a high-level leadership platform with policymakers.

Momentum for Change: Women for Results

Women are disproportionately impacted by the effects of climate change, such as droughts, floods and other extreme weather events. But women are also taking a leadership role in addressing climate change.

The 2013 Momentum for Change: Women for Results Lighthouse Activities are shining examples of climate action led by women for women. These activities demonstrate measurable impact on the ground, and the potential for replicability and scalability at the local, national and international levels.

At the event, representatives of these women-led activities presented what they are doing, how they are doing it and how others can do it too.

Momentum for Change: Financing for Climate-friendly Investment

Given our planet's growing environmental and resource challenges, such as climate change and water security, the imperative for shifting development onto a more sustainable pathway is increasingly clear. Governments can use strategically targeted public funds and policies to address the risks faced by private investors, resulting in a significant increase in private capital flows for climate-friendly development.

The 2013 Momentum for Change: Financing for Climate-friendly Investment Lighthouse Activities are innovative examples of green growth financing. These activities demonstrate measurable impact on the ground, and the potential for replicability and scalability at the local, national and international levels.

Representatives of these activities will present what they are doing, how they are doing it and how others can do it too.

COP Presidency Business Dialogue

The private sector has been instrumental in mobilizing action and promoting sustainable business solutions in response to climate change. Recognizing the growing role of the private sector and the need to further engage in public-private cooperation, the incoming COP 19/CMP 9 Presidency will hold a dialogue with policy-makers, business executives and civil society. The event will discuss the following key topics:

  • How innovation can stimulate climate and growth objectives. Can public-private co-operation help?

  • Optimizing climate policy toolbox - What governments expect from business and what business community needs from governments

The dialogue will be open to all conference participants, including the press. The event will be held in English.

Momentum for Change: 2013 Lighthouse Activities Showcase Event

The Momentum for Change showcase event will recognize and celebrate the 2013 Lighthouse Activities. With remarks by UN Secretary General Mr. Ban Ki-moon and UNFCCC Executive Secretary Ms. Christiana Figueres, and speeches by climate leaders, expect an exciting show with an uplifting musical performance.

By demonstrating that climate action is happening on the ground, with real economic, environmental and social benefits, Momentum for Change aims to inspire decision makers and the public at large to support immediate and ambitious climate action.

COP Presidency Cities and Sub-national Dialogue

Cities and the sub-national level have been increasingly active in taking action on climate change and many are in a position to showcase a number of innovative approaches and achievements. As a result of this, as well as due to the need to engage with all stakeholders in the international climate process, the incoming COP 19/CMP 9 Presidency will hold a dialogue with Mayors and other sub-national leaders. The event will discuss the following key topics:

  • Enhancing adaptation and resilience at the local level.

  • Enhancing global mitigation efforts through action at the local level.

The dialogue will be open to all conference participants, including the press. The event will be held in English.

Momentum for Change: Urban Poor

Although urban centres are often ill-prepared to meet the basic needs of rapidly expanding populations, the urban poor are incredibly resourceful people, with their own networks and the proven capacity to save and invest in the betterment of their communities. Climate change creates a stimulus for action to improve and transform some of the most vulnerable urban communities.

The 2013 Momentum for Change: Urban Poor Lighthouse Activities address climate change and improve livelihoods and living conditions in urban areas of developing countries. These activities demonstrate measurable impact on the ground, and the potential for replicability and scalability at the local, national and international levels.

Representatives of these activities will present what they are doing, how they are doing it and how others can do it too.

Momentum for Change Launch event: ICT Solutions

The information, communication and technology (ICT) sector has an important role to play in addressing climate change. The ICT sector is taking action on climate change in various ways, including improving energy efficiency, reducing carbon emissions, encouraging access to sustainable technologies, and supporting ICT-enabled transformation across all industries and sectors around the globe.

Momentum for Change is proud to launch its newest pillar, ICT Solutions, in partnership with the Global e-Sustainability Initiative (GeSI).

This roundtable event will feature a high-level dialogue between senior government officials and corporate leaders from the ICT sector to discuss the important role ICT plays in addressing climate change.
