United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR)
Profile summary
UNDRR oversees the implementation of the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction, supporting countries in its implementation, monitoring and sharing what works in reducing existing risk and preventing the creation of new risk. It focuses on comprehensive risk management through the development of guidance documents at the global level and training documents at the country level including capacity development on risk-based approaches and Multi-Hazard Early Warning Systems (MHEWS). UNDRR is also implementing the Climate Risks and Early Warning Systems (CREWS) project with the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) in LDCs and SIDS, along with partners working directly with countries on technical assessment and capacity development. Efforts to implement the project in Africa are in the pipeline in several African countries/regions.
Work relevant to the provision of technical assistance
Collection and management of data and information (including databases, systematic observations etc)
Technical assistance that supports design and implementation of projects on Loss and Damage e.g., nature-based solutions and disaster risk reduction
Early warning systems
Capacity-development in risk-based approaches
Analyses of data and information
The Global Risk Assessment Framework (GRAF) employs a program approach in accessing risk data that is applied in decision-making. User-demand for GRAF increased as there are at least 5 national or local authorities requesting GRAF beyond the 5 national pilots.
In terms of early warning systems at the regional level, UNDRR works on multi-hazard warning systems which includes theCREWS regional projectand is gathering experience through the Caribbean national disaster risk reduction strategies.
UNDRR has updated the DRR4NAPs, which is a supplement for the integration of disaster risk reduction into National Adaptation Planning.
It has completed the regional assessment report that provides DRR initiatives, good practices and lessons learnt at the regional level. A pilot is being implemented in Costa Rica.
UNDRR has an ongoing project to digitize meteorological data in West Africa.
UNDRR is willing to facilitate linkages in response to LAC country needs and provide support in building databasesthrough a potential partnership with UNSPIDER which supports countries in implementing space technologies
