Abstract
This document provides a review of the scope of work undertaken by 164 organizations working on slow onset events (SOEs), as contained in the SOEs database developed by the WIM ExCom as at February 2018. The document presents information by geographic region: Asia, Africa, Caribbean and Central America, Europe, Pacific/Oceania, Polar Regions, North America and South America. The scope of work reported by organizations is clustered under three key functional areas: 1) enhancing knowledge and understanding, 2) strengthening dialogue, coordination and coherence, and 3) enabling action and support. The scope of work is also assessed across the different types of SOEs: increasing temperatures; desertification; loss of biodiversity; land and forest degradation; glacial retreat and related impacts; ocean acidification; sea level rise; and salinization., .The document includes a selection of regional examples for each function, illustrating practical efforts made by organizations working on SOEs.
The findings reveal a range of areas that that these organizations focused on, including, data collection and management, assessments, designing approaches to address associated impacts, communication, outreach, and stakeholder engagement, mainly in the areas of loss of biodiversity and land and forest degradation. Notable gaps in areas such as salinization, ocean acidification, desertification, and glacial retreat were identified. Investments and implementation efforts were given a limited focus according to the scope of work reported by these organizations
