SB 64

The upcoming SB 64 session will take place from 8 - 18 June 2026 in Bonn, Germany. The SBSTA and the SBI will lead the technical work necessary for a successful outcome at COP 31. The SB Chairs are committed to collaborating with Parties and non-Party stakeholders to fulfill the emerging mandates from SB 63 and from previous sessions, while also advancing ongoing work paving the way for further progress.

20-21 May 2026 - The Copenhagen Climate Ministerial will take place in Copenhagen, Denmark, where ministers and decision-makers from around the world will gather as a part of the annual cycle of international climate negotiations leading up to COP 31 in Turkey in November. The SBI Chair will be in attendance and engage with Parties and other stakeholders in the lead up to SB 64 in Bonn.

21-25 Apr 2026 -The SBI Chair engaged with participants at the Climate Week 3 which took place in Yeosu, Republic of Korea. The event convened Parties and stakeholders in a unified platform linking UNFCCC processes with real-world action to improve efficiency and impact. At this event, the SBI Chair engaged with Parties and observers at the Fifth dialogue under the United Arab Emirates Just Transition Work Programme and at the Article 6.4 Strategic Market Dialogue. 21-22 Apr 2026 - The SB Chairs actively participated in the 17th Petersberg Climate Dialogue which took place in Berlin, Germany. The event brought together high-level representatives from around dozens of countries to discuss to discuss key priorities for the climate year 2026 and COP 31, to foster early political alliances and partnerships, to showcase positive examples of successful transformation, and to highlight the contribution of ambitious climate policies to economic development.

4-5 Mar 2026 - The Japan–Brazil Informal Meeting on Further Actions against Climate Change took place in Tokyo, Japan, continuing a long-standing dialogue between climate negotiators from around the world. Co-chaired by Japan and Brazil, this annual meeting provided an opportunity for participants to reflect on the outcomes of COP 30 in Belém and set the stage for the technical discussions at SB 63 in Bonn, contributing to momentum toward COP 31 in Antalya.

01 June 2026 - An informal virtual consultation on the UAE just transition work programme was convened by the SB Chairs at the Heads of Delegation level with Parties and negotiating groups for informal exchanges among participants in preparation for SB 64.

28 May 2026 -– A virtual informal discussion on matters related to the Global Goal on Adaptation was convened by the Chairs of the SBSTA and the SBI. The virtual informal discussion provided Parties with an opportunity to exchange views ahead of SB 64, including their priorities and expectations regarding matters related to the GGA at the session.

14 May 2026 - The SBI Chair and the COP 30 Presidency convened a virtual informal discussion on matters relating to technology development and transfer to be considered at SBI 64, and provided a space for exchange among Parties and Chairs and Coordinators of Negotiating Groups to share views on their priorities and expectations for various agenda items at the meeting. The presentation is available here.

Intersessional Engagements - 2025

13-14 Oct 2025 - The COP 30 incoming Presidency convened the Preparatory Ministerial Meeting of the 30th Conference of the Parties to the UNFCCC 2025 at the International Convention Center of Brazil, Brasília. The two-day programme of the Pre-COP is available here.

25 Sep 2025 - The SB Chairs participated in the informal consultations convened by the COP 30 Presidency with all negotiating groups and other Parties on the margins of the  the 80th UN General Assembly and the Climate Week in New York.

The consultations built on the views shared by Chairs and Coordinators of negotiating groups and Parties during the online consultations convened by the incoming Presidency on 11 September 2025. 

The meeting provided space for candid exchange among Parties on three key themes:

• United in celebration of the 10-year anniversary of the Paris Agreement

• Paris Agreement policy cycle fully in motion

• Responding to urgency - accelerating implementation, solidarity and ambitious international cooperation

25-26 Mar 2025 - The 16th Petersberg Climate Dialogue took place in Berlin, Germany, bringing together high-level representatives from around dozens of countries to discuss key climate action priorities in the lead-up to COP 30 in Belém. The SB Chairs actively engaged with stakeholders to drive forward critical technical work at SB 62 in June.

13-14 Mar 2025 - The Japan–Brazil Informal Meeting on Further Actions against Climate Change took place in Tokyo, Japan, continuing a long-standing dialogue between climate negotiators from around the world. Co-chaired by Japan and Brazil, this annual meeting provided an opportunity for participants to reflect on the outcomes of COP 29 in Baku and set the stage for the technical discussions at SB 62 in Bonn, contributing to momentum toward COP 30 in Belém.

7-8 Mar 2025 - The Copenhagen Climate Ministerial took place in Copenhagen, Denmark, bringing together climate leaders and ministers from across the globe to galvanize climate action and build momentum towards an ambitious outcome at COP 30 in Belém. The SBI Chair was in attendance and liaised with Parties and other stakeholders in the lead up to SB 62 in Bonn.

27 Feb 2025 - The first multilateral consultation of the year took place virtually at the Heads of Delegation level and focused on taking stock of COP 29 outcomes and the way forward towards COP 30. More information can be found at The road to Belém.

Programmatic Work - 2025

3-4 Oct 2025 - A workshop under the UAE–Belém work programme on indicators was an opportunity for Parties to consider the proposed indicators with a view to agreeing a decision at CMA 7. Experts’ participation at the workshop is valued, to provide explanations of the approach taken to the final proposed list of indicators and further clarification and expert input to Parties, as requested. 29 Sep 2025 - The second global dialogue on impacts of implementation of response measures took place in Istanbul, Turkiye and focused on advancing the implementation and mainstreaming of response measures in the context of NDCs: Managing synergies and trade-offs to create jobs, enhance co-benefits, and promote equitable approaches to critical minerals. 25 Sep 2025 - A virtual informal discussion was convened by the COP 29 Presidency, the COP 30 incoming Presidency and the SBI Chair on matters relating to technology development and transfer, with a focus on the Technology Implementation Programme and the review of the functions of the Climate Technology Centre. The co-chairs' informal note is available here.

20-22 Aug 2025 - The meeting of experts under the UAE–Belém work programme on indicators took place in Nairobi, Kenya to facilitate the work of experts supporting the technical work under the work programme. The mandated workshop aimed to facilitate expert deliberations on further refining indicators under the UAE–Belém Work Programme. 

10 Jul 2025 - The informal virtual consultations on the topic for the fourth Dialogue under the United Arab Emirates just transition work programme was held.

4 Jun 2025 - The SBSTA-IPCC Joint Working Group meeting took place. 

23 May 2025 - The mandated event Consultation to present the updated NAP technical guidelines to Parties took place during the 2025 Climate Week in Panama. The consultation presented the updated technical guidelines for NAP formulation and implementation and featured practical demonstrations of the updated guidelines, targeted training, and collaborative exchanges to facilitate peer learning. Watch webcast here

22-23 May 2025 - The mandated event 3^rd Dialogue under the United Arab Emirates just transition work programme took place during the 2025 Climate Week in Panama. The dialogue focused on “Approaches to enhancing adaptation and climate resilience in the context of just transitions”. Watch webcast here

20 May 2025 - The mandated event 5^th global dialogue and investment-focused event under the Sharm el-Sheikh mitigation ambition and implementation work programme took place during the 2025 Climate Week in Panama. The dialogue focused on enabling mitigation solutions in the forest sector, drawing on national and regional experience. Watch webcast here

13 May 2025 - The Informal virtual discussion on Technology Development and Transfer enabled an early exchange of views to lay the groundwork for swift progress on this important topic at SBI 62 in June, with a focus on the Technology Implementation Programme (TIP) and the review of the functions of the Climate Technology Centre (CTC), as decisions on these items are due this year. 30 Apr 2025 - The Informal consultations on the second GST Annual (NDC) Dialogue was held to hear Parties’ proposals and expectations for this year’s GST NDC dialogue and to share thoughts on the summary report of the dialogue. Watch webcast here

29 Apr 2025 - The Informal dialogue on increasing the efficiency of the UNFCCC process (AIM) convened by the SBI Chair with Parties and negotiating groups to facilitate early engagement and build momentum for consideration at SBI 62. Watch webcast here

24 Apr 2025 - Informal consultation on the topic of the 17^th Meeting of the research dialogue was held including discussions on the effective means for streamlining proposed topics for the research dialogues. Watch webcast here

21-22 Mar 2025 - The Global Goal on Adaptation Workshop took place in Bonn, Germany  to facilitate the work of experts supporting the technical work under the work programme. 20 Mar 2025 - An Informal virtual consultation on the topic for the third dialogue under the UAE Just Transition Work Programme was held. 

19 Mar 2025 - The Mitigation Work Programme virtual consultation with Parties to enable them to contribute to the agenda, sub-topics, and guiding questions (decision 2/CMA.6, paragraph 11(c)) took place. 

4-6 Mar 2025 - The SBI Chair gave opening remarks at the Consultative Group of Experts meeting which met to conduct its 7th Informal Forum, providing a platform for exchange and discussion on capacity-building and transparency-related issues. The forum brought together Parties, experts and stakeholders to share insights, best practices, and challenges in implementing reporting and transparency frameworks under the UNFCCC.
