Work of the Subsidiary Bodies in 2025

In 2025, the SBSTA and the SBI will both individually and jointly contribute to delivering several mandates for SB 62 in Bonn, Germany as well as SB 63 in Belém, Brazil. Their joint work includes matters relating to the Global Goal on Adaptation, Just Transition Work Programme, continuing work under the Mitigation Ambition and Implementation Work Programme, the Sharm el-Sheikh Work Programme on Agriculture and Food Security, the procedural and substantive elements of the Global Stocktake process, Adaptation Committee, Warsaw International Mechanism, Technology, as well as Matters Relating to the Implementation of Response Measures.

Engagements and mandated work of the SB Chairs

 SB 62

The upcoming SB 62 session will take place from 16 - 26 June 2025 in Bonn, Germany. The SBSTA and the SBI will lead the technical work necessary for a successful outcome at COP 30 (10-21 November 2025). The SB Chairs are committed to collaborating with Parties and non-Party stakeholders to fulfill the emerging mandates from SB 61 and from previous sessions, while also advancing ongoing work paving the way for further progress.

27 Feb 2025 - The first multilateral consultation of the year took place virtually at the Heads of Delegation level and focused on taking stock of COP 29 outcomes and the way forward towards COP 30. More information can be found at The road to Belém.

 

13-14 Mar 2025 - The Japan–Brazil Informal Meeting on Further Actions against Climate Change took place in Tokyo, Japan, continuing a long-standing dialogue between climate negotiators from around the world. Co-chaired by Japan and Brazil, this annual meeting provided an opportunity for participants to reflect on the outcomes of COP 29 in Baku and set the stage for the technical discussions at SB 62 in Bonn, contributing to momentum toward COP 30 in Belém.

 

25-26 Mar 2025 - The 16th Petersberg Climate Dialogue took place in Berlin, Germany, bringing together high-level representatives from around dozens of countries to discuss key climate action priorities in the lead-up to COP 30 in Belém. The SB Chairs actively engaged with stakeholders to drive forward critical technical work at SB 62 in June.

 

7-8 Mar 2025 - The Copenhagen Climate Ministerial took place in Copenhagen, Denmark, bringing together climate leaders and ministers from across the globe to galvanize climate action and build momentum towards an ambitious outcome at COP 30 in Belém. The SBI Chair was in attendance and liaised with Parties and other stakeholders in the lead up to SB 62 in Bonn.

4-6 Mar 2025 - The SBI Chair gave opening remarks at the Consultative Group of Experts meeting which met to conduct its 7th Informal Forum, providing a platform for exchange and discussion on capacity-building and transparency-related issues. The forum brought together Parties, experts and stakeholders to share insights, best practices, and challenges in implementing reporting and transparency frameworks under the UNFCCC. 19 Mar 2025 - The Mitigation Work Programme virtual consultation with Parties to enable them to contribute to the agenda, sub-topics, and guiding questions (decision 2/CMA.6, paragraph 11(c)) took place. 

 

20 Mar 2025 - An Informal virtual consultation on the topic for the third dialogue under the UAE Just Transition Work Programme was held. 

 

21-22 Mar 2025 - The Global Goal on Adaptation Workshop took place in Bonn Germany  to facilitate the work of experts supporting the technical work under the work programme. The mandated workshop facilitated expert deliberations on refining indicators under the UAE–Belém Work Programme. Watch webcast here and here

 

24 Apr 2025 - Informal consultation on the topic of the 17th Meeting of the research dialogue was held including discussions on the effective means for streamlining proposed topics for the research dialogues. Watch webcast here

 

29 Apr 2025 - The Informal dialogue on increasing the efficiency of the UNFCCC process (AIM) convened by the SBI Chair with Parties and negotiating groups to facilitate early engagement and build momentum for consideration at SBI 62. Watch webcast here

 

30 Apr 2025 - The Informal consultations on the second GST Annual (NDC) Dialogue was held to hear Parties’ proposals and expectations for this year’s GST NDC dialogue and to share thoughts on the summary report of the dialogue. Watch webcast here

 

13 May 2025 - The Informal virtual discussion on Technology Development and Transfer enabled an early exchange of views to lay the groundwork for swift progress on this important topic at SBI 62 in June, with a focus on the Technology Implementation Programme (TIP) and the review of the functions of the Climate Technology Centre (CTC), as decisions on these items are due this year. 20 May 2025 - The mandated event 5th global dialogue and investment-focused event under the Sharm el-Sheikh mitigation ambition and implementation work programme took place during the 2025 Climate Week in Panama. The dialogue focused on enabling mitigation solutions in the forest sector, drawing on national and regional experience. Watch webcast here

 

22-23 May 2025 - The mandated event 3rd Dialogue under the United Arab Emirates just transition work programme took place during the 2025 Climate Week in Panama. The dialogue focused on “Approaches to enhancing adaptation and climate resilience in the context of just transitions”. Watch webcast here

 

23 May 2025 - The mandated event Consultation to present the updated NAP technical guidelines to Parties took place during the 2025 Climate Week in Panama. The consultation presented the updated technical guidelines for NAP formulation and implementation and featured practical demonstrations of the updated guidelines, targeted training, and collaborative exchanges to facilitate peer learning. Watch webcast here

 

4 Jun 2025 – The SBSTA-IPCC Joint Working Group meeting is scheduled to take place.
