Official side events and Mini side events

Official side events and Mini side events are a platform for admitted observer organizations, which have limited speaking opportunities in the formal negotiations, to engage with Parties and other participants for knowledge sharing, capacity building, networking and exploring actionable options for meeting the climate challenge.

UN agencies, admitted observer organizations and those Parties that partner with observers present their work or foster discussions on key issues, often engaging the audience in a Q&A session.

As introduced after the adoption of the Paris Agreement, the official side events and Mini side events are organized under the common theme “Accelerating implementation of the Paris Agreement“ and will be categorized under the three categories:

1. Enhancing ambition:
pre-2020 action; any issues that help increase ambition.
2. Promoting implementation:
methodologies, showcasing of climate action, global stocktake, etc.
3. Providing support to developing countries:
means of implementation, replicable tools and approaches.

Each side event and Mini side event is thus categorized in line with its main focus and color-coded accordingly on the side events web schedule.

Greening of side events

With a view to reinforcing the greening of the conference, the organizers of all official side events were strongly encouraged by the UNFCCC secretariat to disseminate their side event materials through electronic means only. In order to track the sustainability level of each side event, a 3-level rating was used: 'green' (electronic dissemination of materials only), 'orange' (limited number of printed materials combined with electronic dissemination) and 'red' (a lot of leftover printed materials).

Thanks to the exemplary commitment and cooperation of many side event organizers and exhibitors, 40 side events (38 % of the total of 91) and 15 exhibits (49 % of the total of 33) were rated green. The list of all 'green' side events can be found through the link below.

Climate Action Fair

The UNFCCC secretariat is organizing a Climate Action Fair during SB 46, from 8 to 18 May. Its objective is to show the actions among “non-Party” stakeholders, including civil society, businesses, cities and regions in supporting the implementation of the Paris Agreement and the  Marrakech Partnership for Global Climate Action.
The Climate Action Fair consists of a series of events, including UNFCCC mandated events, side events, and the Climate Change Studio events. For more information, please check the link below.

Practical information

Venue and location
All official side events and exhibits will take place within the conference venue at the World Conference Center Bonn (WCCB). Please consult the direction signs on site for the exact location of the rooms for side events and the exhibit area.

The conference venue is a non-smoking environment. Smokers are encouraged to enjoy the fresh air outside the conference halls. Food and drinks are not permitted in any of the side event rooms. All participants are kindly asked to keep the rooms in an uncluttered and clean state for subsequent meetings. Please do not change the layout of the side event rooms. Allocated times should be respected as side events often take place back-to-back.

Access to side events and exhibit area
All speakers and participants who wish to take part in a side event or visit an exhibit must be in possession of a conference badge for SB 46, i.e. duly registered as representative of a Party or observer organization, in order to access side events. Additional registration to attend a side event is not necessary. Please find further information on registering for the conference here.
