Background

The IPCC at its 43rd session in Nairobi in 2016 discussed a synthesis of proposals from UN Member States, UN Organizations, and Observer Organizations on the theme of Special Reports during the Sixth Assessment Report (AR6) cycle.

The IPCC approved and accepted the special report titled 'Special Report on the Ocean and Cryosphere in a Changing Climate' (SROCC) at its 51st Session held on the 20th to the 23rd of September 2019 in the Principality of Monaco. The SROCC’s Summary for Policymakers (SPM) was approved by the IPCC plenary on 24th of September 2019.

The Special Report was prepared under the joint scientific leadership of Working Groups I and II of the IPCC, with support from the Technical Support Unit of WGII. As in the previously released Special Report on Climate Change and Land, over half (52%) of the authors of this Special Report were from developing countries and 30% of the contributing experts were women. Authors worked closely with indigenous peoples to co-produce the Report.

An informal information note has been prepared by the SBSTA and IPCC Chairs to outline the agenda and to provide further background information on the Special Event.
