Background

This National Meeting responds to the urgent need to strengthen the country's capacity to implement effective climate measures in Guatemala.

The event focuses on strengthening Guatemala's agro-industrial sector, which is crucial to the country's economy, food security and employment but vulnerable to climate change. With the upcoming 2025 update to Guatemala's nationally determined contribution (NDC) focusing on alignment of private and public sector efforts with international climate commitments, particularly through carbon footprint measurement and integration into national policies, the event provides a platform to discuss how to improve and adjust climate mitigation and adaptation strategies in the agribusiness sector. Additionally, it will explore opportunities in carbon markets and Article 6 of the Paris Agreement which represents significant opportunity for climate finance and sustainable project development, while promoting regional cooperation and knowledge exchange with Panama.

As a strategic initiative to move towards sustainable and climate resilient development, this event is organized in collaboration with Guatemalan Sugar Producers Association (ASAZGUA) to strengthen the county's capacity to implement effective climate actions, promote the inclusion of mitigation and adaptation measures in national policies, and foster regional cooperation on critical issues such as carbon footprints and sustainable water management.

Objective

Facilitate a national meeting focused on strengthening climate action in Guatemala's agro-industrial sector, with emphasis on carbon footprint measurement and integration into the country's 2025 Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs)
