1. Background

Pursuant to decision 18/CMA.1 on the modalities, procedures and guidelines (MPGs) for the transparency framework for action and support, the SBSTA is requested to develop, inter alia, common reporting tables (CRT) for the electronic reporting of information in national inventory reports of anthropogenic emissions by sources and removals by sinks of greenhouse gases (GHG).

To maximize progress of work on this SBSTA agenda sub-item, and minimize disruption and delay stemming from the COVID-19 pandemic, the SBSTA chair requested the UNFCCC secretariat to organize an informal technical workshop to advance discussion among Parties on possible options for designing CRTs for national GHG inventories.

2. Objectives

The objectives of the informal technical workshop are to:

Further enhance understanding on possible options for CRT of national GHG inventories;
Consider examples and options for the format and content of CRT tables in accordance with the MPGs as contained in the annex to decision 18/CMA.1;
Consider options for implementing in the CRT the flexibility provisions contained in the MPGs.

The informal technical workshop will feature: an introductory presentation by the secretariat summarizing views by Parties on the options for the tabular format, including sectoral tables, and options for implementation of flexibility.

Specific guiding questions will be provided to target discussions around examples of tabular formats, including for sectoral tables.

Do the tables presented reflect the experience with the current MRV system?
