Organizers

Raoul Wallenberg Institute of Human Rights and Humanitarian Law in collaboration with SwedBio

Background

The session aims to explore the implementation of HRBA to climate action, leveraging the complementary expertise of RWI and SwedBio.

RWI specializes in advancing human rights at the intersection of environmental issues, focusing on capacity-building initiatives and the integration of human rights- and gender-based approaches into climate displacement discourse through tools like FIRE. SwedBio, on the other hand, emphasizes sustainable governance of biodiversity and addresses interconnected challenges such as biodiversity loss, climate change, and food insecurity. By facilitating knowledge exchange and equitable local engagement in policy processes, SwedBio enhances the effectiveness of collaborative initiatives.

Together, RWI and SwedBio bring a wealth of knowledge to the session, which will identify opportunities for operationalizing HRBA across governance scales, discuss implementation challenges, and introduce the FIRE tool to assist participants in assessing and integrating HRBA into climate adaptation and disaster risk reduction efforts. This collaborative approach aims to empower diverse stakeholders to ensure that climate action upholds human rights and promotes gender equality.

Objectives

  • Examine the implementation of a Human Rights-Based Approach (HRBA) to climate action, exploring its meaning and practical applications.

  • Identify opportunities and modalities for effectively operationalizing HRBA across governance scales.

  • Discuss challenges in HRBA implementation, focusing on power dynamics, inequalities, and the importance of transparency and accountability.

  • Introduce the FIRE tool to assist diverse participants in assessing and integrating HRBA into climate change adaptation and disaster risk reduction efforts.
