Background
The 29th meeting of the Conference of the Parties (COP29) of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) concluded on 24 November 2024 in Baku, Azerbaijan, and resulted in several landmark decisions advancing global climate action. This webinar series aims to provide an overview of the major outcomes of COP29, unpacking key decisions and translating them into actionable insights for the Middle East, North Africa and South Asia regions, which face unique vulnerabilities and opportunities in addressing climate change.
At the core of the talks in Baku was the New Collective Quantified Goal on Climate Finance (NCQG), which set a goal of at least USD 300 billion per year by 2035 for developing country Parties for climate action.
The NCQG comes at an especially important time as the next round of NDCs are to be submitted by countries in 2025. These decisions are especially relevant for the MENA and South Asia as they continue to struggle to access adequate climate finance. The MENA region in particular receives a very small share of global climate finance even now.
As COP30 approaches, reviewing progress on COP29 decisions is crucial for stakeholders in MENA and South Asia region to anticipate next steps and identify implementation opportunities. This webinar on climate finance, part of the COP29 Outcomes Webinar Series hosted by RCC MENA & SA and the UNFCCC Secretariat, will offer a platform to understand key aspects of the NCQG, assess its implications, and discuss regional priorities for effective action.
