Background
Nature-based solutions (NbS) are being recognized as one important means to enable integrated approaches for disaster risk reduction (DRR) and climate change adaptation (CCA). Leveraging the maximum benefit of NbS - including achieving global frameworks and related national policies - requires linking approaches across sectors and planning levels. In support of this, UNDRR and UNU-EHS have developed a toolkit as a step-by-step guide for the coherent integration of NbS into a Comprehensive Disaster and Climate Risk Management (CRM) strategy. These materials form the basis for the proposed session.
This session familiarizes policy-makers with integrating Nature-based Solutions (NbS) into strategic climate and disaster risk management planning. Using a UNU-EHS and UNDRR toolkit, participants co-create pathways to accelerate NbS uptake. Outcomes include cross-sectoral collaboration, capacity-building, and alignment with COP30’s Global Mutirão vision of collective, people-centered transformation.
Objectives
-
Discuss relevant actors at national and subnational levels to enhance planning and implementation of integrated NbS approaches for climate and disaster risk reduction (DRR) action
-
Familiarize participants with NbS in the context of comprehensive disaster and climate risk management
-
Present the broad spectrum of NbS and enable participants to identify and select the measures relevant to specific hazards
-
Build skills in mapping and engaging stakeholders for inclusive governance of NbS
-
Link NbS interventions and stakeholder strategies to national planning and policy frameworks
