Background

The Paris Agreement, adopted in 2015, underscores the urgent need for collaborative efforts to limit global warming and achieve climate neutrality. Article 6 of the Agreement plays an important role in enabling international cooperation through market-based and non-market approaches to enhance ambition and support the achievement of Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs). Its approaches, including cooperative approaches under Article 6.2, the Article 6.4 mechanism, and non-market approaches under Article 6.8, provide pathways for countries and stakeholders to engage in sustainable climate action.

The 29th Conference of the Parties (COP29) in Baku marked a critical milestone in advancing the operationalization of Article 6. Key decisions were adopted on Articles 6.2, 6.4, and 6.8, addressing issues such as transparency, methodologies, governance structures, and the transition from the Clean Development Mechanism (CDM). These developments set the stage for immediate next steps that Parties and non-party stakeholders, including the private sector, must undertake to leverage the full potential of Article 6 mechanisms.

Against this backdrop, the UNFCCC Secretariat and its Regional Collaboration Centre for West and Central Africa (RCC WAC Africa) are convening a webinar titled "Article 6 - What’s Next after Baku.".
