Background

The 29th meeting of the Conference of the Parties (COP29) of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) concluded on 24 November 2024 in Baku, Azerbaijan, marking several landmark decisions to advance global climate action.

With significant updates expected on the different processes under the Paris Agreement, including through Article 6, it is essential to translate these outcomes into actionable insights for regions like the Middle East, North Africa, and South Asia, which face unique vulnerabilities and opportunities in addressing climate change.

In Baku countries agreed on new guidance on Article 6.2, 6.4, 6.8 and relating to the transition from the Clean Development Mechanism (CDM). The webinar is an opportunity to better understand these important outcomes, and the next steps for countries and Non-Party stakeholders to engage with various aspects of Article 6 operationalization.

Objectives

The webinar aims to:

  • Present an overview of Article 6 and its role in the Paris Agreement;
  • Highlight the main COP29 outcomes relevant to Article 6, focusing on key decisions related to Articles 6.2, 6.4, 6.8, and transition from the CDM;
  • Identify the immediate next steps for Parties and Non-party stakeholders, including the private sector, to effectively participate in the implementation of Article 6.
