The West African Development Bank (BOAD) has agreed to support the creation of the Academy for Global Youth Leadership Empowerment (AGYLE) Center in Africa up to the amount of $200,000. The funds will mainly be used for the preparation of the Youth Climate Summit, which is a platform for young climate action leaders to showcase their solutions at the United Nations and to meaningfully engage with decision-makers on the defining issue of our time.

Addressing the growing demands from African Youth Organizations to strengthen their capacities in the broader spectrum of climate change negotiations and climate action in general, RCC Lome in partnership with the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) of Ghana called for the establishment of an Africa AGYLE Hub. The Hub aims to: empower and interconnect young, responsible African citizens, champions, and entrepreneurs able to drive Africa’s emerging green, sustainable and climate-resilient future.

An innovative training approach in the region, AGYLE will offer a holistic training programme (face-to-face training, practical activities, mentoring, online trainings) to youth stakeholders, directly or indirectly engaged with the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) process, in the region and beyond, to empower youth on climate change and facilitate youth-led climate action

Based on its principles of inclusivity and gender and national representation, the hub will ensure that different individuals and youth groups, such as young women, young indigenous people, young persons with disabilities, and young persons living in underserved communities (including IDPs, labor migrants, etc.) have an equal chance of benefitting from the programmes. The richness of the students’ body will also stimulate the development of future actions that will be more adequately responding to a broader diversity of needs.

The funding received from BOAD will mainly be used towards the establishment of a networking platform and capacity building activities for young delegates’ participation in the pre-COP and COP26 in December 2021.
