Background
The Mohammed VI Foundation for Environmental Protection, which is chaired by Her Royal Highness Princess Lalla Hasnaa, and its academic arm, the Hassan II International Center for Environmental Training, main mission is to raise awareness and educate for sustainable development.
The Foundation, as an accredited observer to the UNFCCC since 2009, has been constructively engaged with the UNFCCC Secretariat through various avenues. Those avenues include Action for Climate Empowerment, the Paris Agreement Committee on Capacity-Building (PCCB) and the Marrakech Partnership for Global Climate Action.
The Hassan II International Center for Environmental Training, the academic arm of the Mohammed VI Foundation for Environmental Protection, which hosts the capacity-building activities of the Foundation, is pleased to collaborate with the PCCB team to present a webinar in July. This event is part of the broader engagement and capacity-building efforts under the PCCB Network's 2024 EOI Agenda. The initiative, titled "Empowering Universities for Climate Action: Challenges and Opportunities for Decarbonization", has been selected for inclusion in this esteemed series of member-led events. The session is designed to address and disseminate key strategies and innovations that empower universities to lead in climate action and decarbonization. This effort aligns with our ongoing commitment to advancing educational institutions as key players in the global climate response.
The webinar showcased a series of initiatives: decarbonization and the African Green Universities and Youth Education Network (AGUYEN). The decarbonization program directly contributes to the goals of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change and the Paris Agreement by empowering stakeholders through education and practical tools to measure and mitigate greenhouse gas emissions.
The African Green Universities and Youth Education Network (AGUYEN) aims to empower universities to acquire the knowledge and skills needed to promote sustainable development, through education for development and give the tools to enable them to teach climate change by building local capacity to tackle the climate problem over the long term, by continuously training students. The Network counts today 33 Universities from 11 African countries (Comoros, Côte d'Ivoire, Democratic Republic of Congo, Kenya, Mauritania, Morocco, Nigeria, Senegal, Tunisia, Mali and Uganda).
These programs are designed to empower educational institutions with the necessary educational frameworks and practical tools for accurate greenhouse gas quantification and verification, discussing the integration of sustainable development and decarbonization into university curricula, highlighting both achievements and ongoing challenges in our collective pursuit of a sustainable future.
Objectives
-
Showcase AGUYEN’s Impact: Discuss the contributions of the African Green Universities and Youth Education Network in empowering universities and students across Africa with knowledge and skills for sustainable development.
-
Comprehensive Introduction and Training program on the Moroccan Carbon Footprint Tool: Provide an in-depth understanding of this tool and how it can be utilized by universities to measure and mitigate greenhouse gas emissions effectively.
-
Facilitate Knowledge Exchange: Create a platform for knowledge sharing and best practices among universities, focusing on the implementation of sustainability and decarbonization strategies.
-
Inspire Action and Collaboration: Encourage universities to collaborate and innovate in their approaches to climate education and action, thereby strengthening their role as leaders in environmental stewardship.
