Background

At the Regional Climate Weeks, the UNFCCC strives to provide youth with opportunities to self-organize capacity-building, advocacy and networking sessions that respond to their specific needs and circumstances in the regions. Building on the success of the youth affiliated events at the 2022 Regional Climate Weeks, in 2023 the youth-led and youth-focused sessions at the four Regional Climate Weeks - the Africa, Middle East and North Africa, Latin America and the Caribbean, and Asia-Pacific Climate Week, were also co-created with YOUNGO and youth organizations from the regions. In this context and tailored to the relevant priorities of each region, the Youth4Capacity program delivered three sessions at each of the four Regional Climate Weeks. The sessions across all four Regional Climate Weeks were anchored on three key themes -

  1. Youth participation in and skills development for a just transition – including topics such as skilling, upskilling and reskilling of young workers in light of the transition towards greener, resilient and climate-neutral economies and societies.
  2. Engaging youth in policy-making processes – including topics such as building capacities of young people in understanding policy development and implementation and integration of community-level needs into policy
  3. Climate communications and community-led climate action – including topics such as facilitating community-led initiatives and partnerships for climate action, skills towards consensus-building at community level, systems thinking, developing effective communication strategies for climate change, engaging diverse audiences in climate action, and empowering youth to become climate advocates.

Objectives

This session sought to bring together outcomes from the Youth4Capacity sessions at all four Regional Climate Weeks in 2023 and provide a space for young people from different regions to engage and exchange with one another as well as other stakeholders.  In a world-cafe-style set up, 3 groups focused on the 3 thematic pillars of the Youth4Capacity sessions where outcomes from each region in the context of the theme were shared and discussions focused on commonalities between the regions, contextual differences, and cross-regional exchange of information, knowledge, and solutions.
