A new interactive digital map showing all the entries of this year’s Global Youth Video Competition is now available online.

More than 180 submissions were sent in in response to the competition, held ahead of the upcoming UN Climate Change Conference in Marrakech (November 7 to 18). Young people between the ages of 18 and 30 could participate, and entries came from 77 different countries (read about the two winners here). Each pin on the map contains the young filmmaker’s name, coordinates of their city and links to further information, along with a link to the video they sent in.

The interactive map was created by Mark Terry, PhD. The multilinear, interactive, digital, GIS map is a research project of Dr. Terry’s at Toronto’s York University. It serves as a case study demonstrating the ways in which film can serve as a data delivery system and a viable instrument of progressive social change.

And it is fantastic to see the enthusiasm and commitment of young people working on concrete ways to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and to adapt to the impacts of climate change. The many videos we received from around the world, placed by Mark on this global, easy to use map, are testimony to this commitment, and I’d encourage everyone to take a look at what young people are doing in their respective regions. Numerous examples of climate action on the ground will be showcased at the upcoming UN Climate Change Conference in Marrakech in November, and the videos help underscore the fact that governments, regions cities, regions, businesses and investors are all stepping up to plate to jointly tackle climate change and create a greener, safer and more sustainable future for themselves and the world.”

The Youth Video Competition was run by Television for the Environment (tve) and is part of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change’s Action for Climate Empowerment and Momentum for Change initiatives in partnership with the Global Environment Facility’s Small Grants Programme, which is implemented by the United Nations Development Programme. The Youth Climate Report film project has been giving youth a voice at UN climate change policy discussions since 2011. The project is supported by the UNFCCC as well as by  UNEP.

Mark Terry will be in Morocco for the COP22 conference and will participate in acknowledging the winners of this year’s competition on Youth Day, November 10, 2016.
