The Presidency Youth Climate Champion (PYCC) role was established at COP28 to facilitate the meaningful engagement of children and youth in climate action, including within the UNFCCC process. Following the success of the COP28 International Youth Climate Delegate Program, the COP29 Presidency Youth Climate Champion, Leyla Hasanova, has launched a regional COP29 Youth Delegates Program to build the capacity of youth to understand and participate in climate mitigation and adaptation policy development processes that align climate national climate actions with international commitments for the successful formulation and implementation of NAPs and NDCs.

The program aims to equip young people with the technical knowledge and skills needed to participate effectively in climate change mitigation and adaptation policy-making processes and to improve their understanding of the linkages between national and international climate processes. Furthermore, the Program also aims to strengthen the network of young people active in the climate field in Central Asia for collaboration and peer-to-peer exchange. The program supports youth (18-35 years old) from civil society and government institutions in Central Asia by building their capacity and facilitating networking with youth delegates from other regions. The program offers delegates the opportunity to participate in a series of virtual activities, including training and skills development modules in the lead-up to COP29.

Further information about the Program

The Program is implemented in collaboration with the Youth Empowerment in Climate Action Platform (YECAP), the UNFCCC Regional Collaboration Center for Asia and the Pacific, and the Generation Nexus Eurasian Youth Network supported by the UNDP Istanbul Regional Hub and UNDP Bangkok Regional Hub to build on existing efforts, create synergies and provide continuity to the work currently underway in the region. Therefore, the Program will strengthen and further develop the capacities of young delegates and provide continuity after COP29 within the framework of existing regional programs. The participants received a negotiation workshop from the Negotiation and Conflict Resolution Collaboratory at Harvard Kennedy School’s CPL. Other activities were delivered by the UNFCCC Regional Collaboration Center for Asia and the Pacific and the World Bank Group Connect4Climate program.
