2 October 2019, Panama City, Panama - XIV edition of the International Sustainability Symposium

The Regional Collaboration Center of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (RCC Panama) received the cordial invitation from the Panama Industrial Union (SIP) to participate in the XIV edition of the International Sustainability Symposium. RCC Panama organized session 3 under the theme, “How do we achieve decarbonization of the economy?”.

The symposium was organized by Industrial Union of Panama and the Ministry of Environment of Panama (MiAmbiente) and took place in Hotel RIU Plaza, this year the main theme was “Sustainable consumption and production, circular economy”.

During panel 3, it was highlighted that the Paris Agreement provides the necessary tools to boost a decarbonized economy through mitigation, adaptation and financing actions. For countries to make a decision focused on decarbonization, it is essential that there is no barrier between the public and private sectors, so that emission reduction strategies that seek to address climate change are achieved within the established time frame.

Some of the areas that show progress in actions towards economy decarbonization in the region are renewable energy, energy efficiency, electric mobility, the calculation of carbon footprint in industry and eco-labeling. Even the circular economy is a climatic action that reduces the carbon and water footprint. For the Ministry of Environment of Panama, carbon neutrality requires additional commitment from all sectors but the efforts are being made to achieve it, for example on the accounting of emissions from the economic sectors at the National Inventory of Greenhouse Gases.

2019, Fortaleza, Brazil - Green economy Solutions for the Americas Regional collaboration, enhanced ambition key to achieving the goals of the Paris Agreement

Climate change is the defining challenge of our time, and it is accelerating faster than our efforts to address it.

The good news is that the global community is working towards meeting the challenge. We are already seeing climate action from almost all sectors with respect to new investments in green technology, green transportation, green infrastructure and more. While that progress has been remarkable, it’s only a fraction of what’s needed.  A clear priority for many developed and developing economies is the need for innovation, productivity, and secure jobs.  Green economy offers vast opportunities in eradicating poverty as well as combating Climate Change and sustaining economic growth, which is of particular concern for the countries in the Global South, as well as enhancing social inclusion, improving human welfare, creating opportunities for employment and decent work for all, while maintaining the healthy functioning of the Earth’s ecosystems.
