Background
COP28 marks 10th anniversary since the Warsaw Framework for REDD+ was adopted in 2013. To date, 60 countries have submitted their forest reference levels covering 1.35 billion ha of forests. This is equal to approximately 62% of the total forest cover in developing countries. Among them, 17 countries fulfilled all requirements to receive results-based payments with a total reduction of 11.6 billion tons of CO2. It is an appropriate moment to celebrate one decade of REDD+ and to reflect on the evolution of REDD+ over time and under the Paris Agreement.
Objectives
In order to raise ambition for mitigation actions in the forest sector, this event aims to:
- inform Parties and other stakeholders interested in REDD+ on the reporting requirements for REDD+ under the ETF;
- present the role of the secretariat in REDD+ reporting and technical assessment/analysis;
- look back at the achievements made by REDD+ countries since 2013;
- share the success stories of REDD+ implementation in developing countries.
Target audience
- Parties interested in REDD+ implementation;
- Stakeholders interested in providing technical and/or financial support to REDD+ implementation, including technical experts, IGOs, NGOs, financial entities, academia.
Impact and outcomes of the event
The participants will receive an update on 10 years of REDD+ implementation, and clarity on how related REDD+ reporting and review processes will continue under the Enhanced Transparency Framework and Article 5 of the Paris Agreement, starting with the biennial transparency reports to be submitted in 2024. Furthermore, the REDD+ success stories shared by invited Parties, as well as clear guidance on REDD+ under the Paris Agreement, will encourage Parties to strengthen collaboration to raise their ambitions for halting deforestation and forest degradation.
