June Momentum for Climate Change
04 Jun 2020
Special event
Effective Delivery of Needs-based Climate Finance

Type: Open

Format:  Multi-stakeholder Dialogue with public broadcast. No registration required.

Background

2020 is projected to be one of the warmest years recorded, putting greater pressure on countries for climate action. The current health and economic crisis caused by COVID-19 exacerbates existing vulnerabilities driving up the cost of climate action. Delivery of climate finance is ever so important to address climate related needs and priorities and help countries to recover sustainably.

A growing number of developing countries are increasing their efforts to identify climate finance needs and devise appropriate strategies. In relation to these efforts, international climate finance is currently being channeled through multilateral and bilateral agencies and dedicated multilateral climate funds, however, access to climate finance remains a formidable challenge for many countries. Specifically, countries express the need to make the access to international climate funds simpler and more efficient, and the financial and technical support of the funds to be aligned with the needs identified by developing countries. These remain critical to transform country and regional climate plans into projects.

Objective

The objective of the event is to share ongoing efforts and experiences on enhancing developing countries access to international climate funds and strengthen the alignment, mobilization and delivery of support to the identified needs and priorities of developing countries. It is part of the June Momentum on Climate Change events that demonstrate the commitment to deliver climate action and ambition in 2020.
