Context
As COP30 marks the 10th anniversary of the Paris Agreement, it represents a defining moment to renew global commitment toward inclusive and equitable climate action. Under the leadership of the Brazilian Presidency, COP30 embodied the spirit of the Mutirão, a colleactive effort to accelerate implementation through participation and collaboration.
Building on the institutionalization of the PYCC role at COP28 (Decision 16/CP.28) and the valuable experiences from the COP29 Presidency, this conversation sought to deepen dialogue between the COP30 PYCC and children and youth in UNFCCC Constituencies. It aimed to reflect on progress made since the establishment of the PYCC mandate as well as the lessons from the first two years of its institutionalization, identify emerging priorities for children and youth during COP30, and discuss ways to strengthen collaboration between the PYCC and children and youth in UNFCCC Constituencies during and beyond COP30.
This conversation follows previous exchanges held at SB60, COP29 and SB62, with both youth in Constituencies and in Party Delegations, ensuring continuity and coordination between Presidencies and across negotiation cycles.
Objectives
This session provided an opportunity for children and youth from diverse constituencies and organizations to engage directly with the COP30 PYCC. The discussion aimed to:
-
Hear from children and youth across different NGOs and constituencies, based on the current state of negotiations, on their priorities and expectations for the priority items within the COP30 outcomes.
-
Take stock of the activities implemented as part of the COP30 PYCC work plan and their impact on enhancing the meaningful, inclusive engagement of children and youth in climate action, empowering young people to usefully contribute to decision-making on climate, elevating and amplifying children and youth voices and catalyzing child- and youth-led climate action.
