Pellets for Cooking - Zambia

Pellets for Cooking is offering a new kind of fuel, made in Zambia specifically designed for both households and businesses. It is making SupaMoto® pellets out of sustainable forestry waste and selling stoves that run on these pellets instead of charcoal. The stoves are built with an internal combustion system that produces clean gas emissions from the pellets. This reduces cooking time by as much as 75%, allows for indoor cooking and does not emit carbon monoxide.

The problem

Zambia is a country with many resources and the potential for tremendous growth. The charcoal industry, however, is extremely destructive. If trees continue to be cut down for charcoal, Zambia will be facing a deforestation crisis. Zambia is already in the middle of an energy crisis, with most people have to adjust to daily load-shedding, which causes interruptions in their electricity supply.

The solution

This activity owns and operates a pellet plant in Kitwe, Zambia, with the capacity of supplying up to 10,000 households with clean, renewable and cheaper cooking fuel, compared to charcoal. So far, this activity has sold 2,000 cooking stoves in Lusaka and the Copperbelt. All products are designed to provide power to a family when there is no electricity. In partnership with Awango by Total, and other leading solar product companies, this activity also offers solar-energy systems with powerful rechargeable lamps, which allows people to plug in their mobile phones and other small devices.
