Green Space, New Life and Plants for the Planet - United Arab Emirates

This activity is reducing the amount of solid waste transported to landfills and is also planting more trees near the landfill area to help reduce methane emissions linked to global warming. This is also making it easier for workers and people who work at or near these landfill sites to stay healthy and safe.

Fast facts:

  • This activity has already planted 1,000 native trees near landfills;
  • Hundreds of youth and women have been engaged in and benefit from this activity.

The problem

The rate at which waste is being generated and then dumped into landfills will make life more difficult as space decreases and toxins are released into the atmosphere. Recycling practices in the United Arab Emirates are also not yet very developed.

The solution

This project is designed to reduce the amount of waste in landfills and plant trees near the landfills for carbon sequestration purposes. It also plans to raise awareness about waste management, landfill reduction, recycling and also promote alternative energy sources like generating electricity from landfill gases. The project plants 150 trees near landfills, which will reduce the carbon footprint of Dubai and will generate 1 Megawatt from landfill gas in the next phase.

Helping the planet

Planting trees benefits the environment through carbon sequestration. This project will also teach people to reduce waste and manage their waste wisely by practicing recycling.

Helping people

The planted trees will grow and provide more oxygen to the area, improving the health of those working in the landfill areas.

Scaling Up

This activity has plans to expand.
