This activity assists communities in using their land for tourism and wildlife conservation instead of relying on land systems like agriculture. Ole’ntille is a successful project in Kenya that has improved the livelihoods of the local community and enhanced conservation. This includes improving livestock breeds by assisting communities to purchase high value breeds, fattening of steers for market production and assisting the farmers access the markets and developing ecotourism business ventures to add value to the already existing economic activities.

The problem
Some communities in Kenya often generate income through their dependence on livestock, an economic activity that is highly prone to diseases and droughts.
The solution
Nasaruni Savings and Credit Co-operative (SACCO), which is one of the activity’s projects, helps assist communities to access market products through loans. Nasaruni SACCO has numerous opportunities including projected increase in membership enrollments, increased member shareholding that will guarantee increased loan rates and improved socio-economic welfare for the communities.

Helping people
Currently there are 1,340 members for the SACCO including men, the elderly, women and persons with disabilities. Some of the social benefits guaranteed by the SACCO include loans, savings and financial investments.
Scaling Up
The SACCO intends to attract more members including enticing local institutions like hospitals and schools to commence streaming in their salaries for payments instead of traveling over 100 kilometres to Nanyuki to find financial institutions.
