UNFCCC Archival Holdings

The UNFCCC Archives provides access to the historical records in a timely and efficient manner in accordance with the UNFCCC Policy for Records and Archives and the Policy on Information Sensitivity, Classification and Handling. It is aiming to digitize as much of the historical collection as possible and make them available for consultation and research.  We offer a sampling of some of the historical collections such as the Convention negotiation text, Kyoto Protocol negotiations and high-level segment statements below.  If you would like to consult our collection, contact Records and Archives Management Team.

Negotiations for the Framework Convention on Climate Change

The Framework Convention on Climate Change treaty was adopted at a session of the Intergovernmental Negotiating Committee for a Framework Convention on Climate Change (INC) on 9 May 1992 and opened for signature at the Rio Earth Summit, held from 3 to 14 June 1992. The negotiations were held over 11 sessions of the INC, beginning in February 1991. The UNFCCC archives contain business records of the negotiations as well as the audio recordings of the sessions. Negotiations for the Kyoto Protocol 

The Kyoto Protocol was adopted on 11 December 1997 at COP3 in Kyoto, Japan.  It commits industrialized nations to reduce their green house gas emissions according to agreed upon targets.  The UNFCCC archives maintains the records of the negotiations of the Kyoto Protocol.  Samples of the collection can be found here: 

Statements at the High Level Segment

Written copies of statements delivered by Parties and Observers at the high-level segments from the Conference of the Parties are maintained in our archives.
