Health National Adaptation Plans (HNAP) outline actions to safeguard health and build climate-resilient health systems. This can anticipate, absorb and transform public health in a changing climate to protect people and manage health risk.

This session aims to encourage countries to submit National Adaptation Plans (NAPs) that include health aspects by facilitating their understanding of the HNAP process illustrated with success stories and lessons learned in the Latin America and the Caribbean region.

Overview

This discussion on strengthening health and climate change in Latin America and the Caribbean will explore two areas.

  • What does it mean to include health in a NAP? How can countries be further encouraged to look at it more closely/in more detail given its importance? What are the countries’ needs?
  • How can we increase the depth of the action each country wants to take and the types of approaches, and how it integrates into other systems?

This session provides an overview of the NAP process and highlights the importance of NAP submission in helping countries address climate impacts. It introduces key COP26 outcomes on adaptation such as the doubling of climate finance by 2025 as a driver for countries to increase ambition on adaptation actions.

Experts join us to outline key linkages on health and climate change and discuss the importance of HNAPs. These plans expand and further integrate health-promoting considerations into adaptation strategies.

Representatives of LAC countries will present and discuss the process of assessing vulnerabilities, addressing those vulnerabilities and incorporating this into national adaptation and mitigation plans.
