Organized by COP28 YCC and YOUNGO
Background
With the growing recognition of intergenerational equity in climate negotiations, young people and future generations have played an increasingly prominent role in shaping international climate policy. However, a strategic, consistent, and long-term approach towards youth engagement that goes beyond individual COP cycles remains limited. In line with the conclusion of the first Global Stocktake at COP28 UAE, a parallel stocktake would pave the way for the institutionalization of meaningful youth engagement in future climate policy processes. Through this exercise, the Youth Climate Stocktake seeks to review the historical development of youth inclusion in UNFCCC processes, analyze the evolution of youth climate policy priorities through the Global Youth Statement, and chart the path forward for meaningful youth engagement.
Session Description
This session aims to provide participants with a clear understanding of the Global Stocktake (GST) and Youth Stocktake (YST) processes, highlighting the essential role of youth engagement in these efforts. It's structured into two parts: the first part focuses on education and awareness, and the second part encourages active participation and feedback.
Segment 1: Understanding the Global Stocktake and Youth Stocktake
The first segment will feature an introduction to the GST and YST. It will underline the significance of youth involvement in this process and provide an overview of the progress made so far.
Following the introductions, there will be an Q&A session featuring representatives from YOUNGO, YCC, and UNFCCC. This Q&A session will address critical and pertinent questions related to the session's theme. Participants will have the opportunity to ask questions with reference to Youth Stocktake and its role in shaping climate policy.
This initial segment aims to equip the audience with the knowledge and awareness necessary to actively contribute to the stocktake process.
Segment 2: Youth Stocktake Consultation for the Asia Pacific Youth
The second segment of the session is dedicated to a Youth Stocktake consultation for Asia Pacific Youth. Through this consultation, participants will have the opportunity to contribute to the progression of Asia Pacific youth involvement in UNFCCC processes.
