Organizers

International Telecommunication Union (ITU), World Meteorological Organization (WMO), Climate Change AI, and Fraunhofer HHI

Background

From 2020 to 2024, ITU and WMO have served as partners (alongside UNEP) within the Focus Group on AI for Natural Disaster Management. The Focus Group’s main objective was to lay the groundwork for international standards. However, an important component of the standard development was capacity-building work: holding a hands-on training session in India, organizing workshops and webinars, publishing open-access papers, and organizing hackathons/challenges. Fraunhofer HHI supported many of these efforts. Meanwhile, Climate Change AI (CCAI) is a non-profit that empowers a global community of innovators, practitioners, and decision-makers to accelerate responsible climate action through the use of AI, by addressing critical gaps in expertise, education, coordination, and research-to-deployment infrastructure.

Objectives

  • Highlighting projects that show how AI can make us resilient to climate-related hazards
  • Discussing inequalities in AI capacities
  • Showcasing different approaches to address these inequalities
  • Discussing how to gauge the effectiveness of these different efforts
