FAQ - Your trip to Africa Climate Week 2023

This FAQ provides tips and travel advice to participants attending Africa Climate Week 2023 in Nairobi, Kenya, from 4 to 8 September 2023. Africa Climate Week 2023 is held with the Africa Climate Summit (ACS).

Co-hosted by the Government of Kenya and the Africa Union Commission, the summit seeks to forge a new path of collaboration and collective action by bringing together a high-level congregation of African Heads of State, International Governments, Organisations and Investors focusing on Climate Action.

Accomodation

Africa Climate Week is located in Nairobi, Kenya. The venues are the Kenyatta International Convention Centre (KICC) and UNON. Events in UNON are by invitation only. 

Shuttle services will run from these hotels to the KICC venue and from UNON to the KICC. If you are not staying in a hotel on this list, you must travel to one of these hotels to take advantage of the shuttle service (schedule TBC).

If you'd like to take an Uber or taxi to the KICC, you will be dropped off further outside the venue area.

Attending ACW

Registration to the event is free of charge, with each participant responsible for arrangements and related costs, including flight, visa, food and accommodation.

Some events at Africa Climate Week may be streamed live on the unfccc.int website. Please also follow #ACW2023 on social media to be a part of the conversation.

The UNFCCC does not provide certificates of participation. Participants are welcome to keep their badges as proof of attendance.

Electrical appliances

The plug type in Kenya is type G; standard 13amp three square pin plugs. Check the plug type of your country to determine whether you will need to use an adaptor.  

The standard voltage is 240V and the frequency is 50hz. You can use all of your usual equipment if the outlet voltage in your country is between 220-240V (most of Europe, Australia, and most countries in Africa and Asia use this voltage). If the voltage in your country is between 100-127V (US, Canada, and countries in South America), you may require a voltage converter.  

Emergency situations

In case of an emergency, please dial any of the following numbers: 999, 112, 911.

All of the numbers will connect you to the police, the fire department or to request ambulance services.

Any suspicious activity can be reported to 0800722203.

Make sure your health insurance plan provides overseas coverage or coverage in other countries and visit a local doctor or hospital for medical advice.

Language

The official language is English, which is widely spoken, and KiSwahili, which is the national language. In addition, there are more than 40 different tribes speaking over 80 different dialects. 

Money

The Kenyan currency is the Kenyan shilling (written abbreviation KSH). The shilling is divided into 100 cents. Coins are available in 50c, 1Shs, 10Shs, 20Shs and 40 shillings. Bank notes are in 50, 100, 200, 500 and 1,000 shillings. The exchange rate is approximately 1 EUR = 149 KSH. 

Cash and credit cards are widely accepted forms of payment in Nairobi. All major forms of credit cards are accepted in East Africa, although it is best to travel with either Mastercard or Visa as these are accepted most widely. (Amex can be useful to withdraw dollars from banks). It’s best to check with your credit card company regarding transaction fees. 

Tipping is appreciated and expected, although not mandatory in Nairobi. When tipping, be sure and tip in shillings, not in your own currency. More information on where and how to tip in Nairobi can be found on Google.  

Timezone

Kenya belongs to the East Africa Time zone. It is three hours ahead of Greenwich Mean Time (GMT +3).  

Transportation

Most international visitors get to Nairobi by flying into the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (NBO), Kenya's main international airport. But you can also reach Nairobi by train, car or bus.

Uber: Uber is frequent and affordable. You can download the Uber app and attach your payment method to begin using the service. Please note that foreign transaction fees may apply based on your payment method.  

Taxis: Taxi services in Nairobi are not metered and the fare should be agreed upon before departure. Taxis operated by private companies like Kenatco can be booked online for added convenience. 

Depending on the location of your hotel, you can take a taxi or an Uber to the Kenyatta International Convention Centre (KICC). 

Vaccinations and Health

Travelers should ensure that they have a valid yellow fever immunization card as this may be requested on arrival. You should be up to date on routine vaccinations while travelling to any destination. Hepatitis A and Typhoid vaccinations are also recommended in Kenya.  Kenya MOH COVID-19 Guideline for Travellers (effective 9th May 2023):

The following measures shall apply to travellers departing and arriving in the country:

1. All travellers arriving in the country through any point of entry shall no longer be required to show proof of either COVID-19 vaccination or a predeparture COVID-19 test.

2. Only travellers arriving at any port of entry into Kenya with flu-like symptoms will be required to fill out the passenger locator form on the ‘jitenge’ platform: https://ears.health.go.ke/airline_registration/. They will also be required to take a COVID-19 antigen test upon arrival at their own cost.

Visa

There is currently a challenge in the Government e-citizen platform, which is impacting processing of e-visa. Therefore, travelers will be issued visa upon arrival at all entry points to Kenya. The Government also wishes to advise all airlines to on-board travelers destined to Kenya. Please see the official Government of Kenya Visa Notice

IMPORTANT E-VISA NOTICE FROM KENYA:  

  • E-visas for Kenya can only be applied for on the official government website: www.evisa.go.ke. Please DO NOT apply for an e-visa through any other website.  

  • The e-visa system is experiencing challenges and travelers can be issued a visa upon arrival.  

Weather

In September, the temperature can range from an average high of 24.6°C (76.3°F) and an average low of 14.2°C (57.6°F). The climate of inland cities, such as Nairobi, is temperate. It is recommended to prepare for dry and rainy days, and to check the weather before travelling.  

Wi-Fi and Phones

There will likely be free Wifi available in hotels and other venues. However, for necessities like taxi travel and translation, you may need to buy a SIM Card to use data. The recommended SIM cards are from: Safaricom, Airtel, Telkom, and Airalo. These can be bought at international airports (though more expensive), mobile provider stores, convenience stores or online. It is best to check with your service provider about what you will need before undertaking any travel.  

The telephone country code in Kenya is +254.

Yes, free Wi-Fi will be provided at the venue.
