Prevention of Food Waste provides a disruptive and innovative technology designed to solve the increasing issue of food waste disposal and its subsequent impact on the planet by combining the power of big data with proprietary clean technology.
Fast facts:
-
The Eco-Safe Digester, an on-site aerobic digester, eliminates up to 1,000 kilograms of food waste in a 24-hour period;
-
This digester is being used in over 300 locations across the globe;
-
In 2014, the digesters diverted more than 1.3 million kilograms of food waste from landfills, reducing carbon emissions by 1,050 metric tonnes.
The problem
According to the United States Environmental Protection Agency, landfills are the third largest emitters of methane gas, which is much more potent than carbon dioxide. Approximately 1.3 billion tonnes of food is wasted each year, which has detrimental environmental and economic effects.
The solution
The Eco-Safe Digester, an on-site aerobic digester, eliminates up to 1,000 kilograms of food waste in a 24-hour period by utilizing mechanical and biological treatments to convert food waste into a liquid that is safely discharged through standard sewers. The digester is the first water-independent aerobic digester with a filtration enhancement function providing the ability to re-circulate the liquid waste. During the process, the digester weighs each increment of waste and then immediately transmits the data to the BioHitech Cloud which measures key metrics to optimize the food waste disposal process. These metrics provide customers with a level of transparency that helps reduce the amount of waste generated and improves environmental performance.
Helping the planet
The removal of each and every pound of food waste destined to a landfill lowers methane emissions from food waste and carbon dioxide emissions by eliminating the need to transport food waste to a landfill.
Helping people
Customers who implement more sustainable waste practices learn more about their business in order to make smart changes that affect their bottom line. By removing waste trucks off the roads, the community benefits from less noise and air pollution.
Scaling Up
Recently, Massachusetts, Vermont, Connecticut, New York City and Austin, Texas passed “bans” on food waste bound for landfills and it is expected that all 50 states in the US will follow suit by 2020. As regulations in the United States continue to be imposed, the demand for this activity’s solutions will continue to grow. The US domestic market alone consists of approximately 250,000 locations, representing a potential USD 3-billion-dollar market.
