The Joint Capacity-building Programme is initiated by the secretariats of the three “Rio Conventions”, namely the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) and the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD). The Programme aims to strengthen individual, institutional, and systemic capacities to enhance synergies between climate actions, biodiversity conservation and sustainable land management, as well as to enhance coordination and coherence in achieving the three Rio Conventions’ objectives and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

The Rio Conventions Joint Capacity-building Programme objectives

The Joint Capacity-building Programme is a catalyst for change, aiming to strengthen the capacities of relevant national institutions and individual policymakers and practitioners. It focuses on integrating and fostering synergies between the Rio Conventions and the SDGs, paving the way for a more sustainable future. Additionally, the Programme aims to establish a mutual learning experience among policymakers from national institutions involved in designing and implementing policies and practitioners supporting programmes and projects at the local level.

The programme aims to:

  • Increase understanding of the interconnectedness of the UNFCCC, CBD, and UNCCD.
  • Enhance capacity for integrated planning and policy development to break silos and avoid duplication.
  • Improve awareness of approaches to mobilize financial resources for synergistic projects.
  • Strengthen recognition of the role of local and indigenous knowledge in environmental governance.
  • Promote cross-sectoral and multi-stakeholder collaboration and sharing of best practices and lessons learnt
Activities

The Joint Capacity-building Programme of the three Rio Conventions—UNFCCC, CBD, and UNCCD—has launched a new webinar series on 'How to build Synergies between the Three Rio Conventions. The series aims to promote synergies, cooperation and collaboration across the Conventions.
