Rio Impact

Background

Efforts to integrate the implementation of the three Rio conventions, together with the SDGs, offer potential opportunities to streamline processes and deliver transformative results. However, in practice, many projects and policies remain narrow in scope and in the level of integration leading to duplication of efforts, incoherent approaches, and limited overall effectiveness. There is a clear need to develop the capacities to carry out climate, biodiversity and land actions in a holistic manner. It is in this spirit that the Joint Liaison Group of UNFCCC, CBD and UNCCD proposed to set up a Joint Capacity-building Programme.

The Programme aims to strengthen individual, institutional, and systemic capacities to enhance synergies between climate actions, biodiversity conservation, and sustainable land management, as well as to enhance coordination and coherence in achieving the three Rio Conventions’ objectives and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). It has developed a series of knowledge products that identified key entry points to foster synergies in practice, including integrated planning of national strategies, financing and resource mobilization for synergistic projects, and leveraging of indigenous knowledge and good practices.

Objectives

This side-event aims to achieve the following outcomes

• Raised awareness of the importance of synergistic approaches to achieve the three Rio Conventions’ objectives

• Increased understanding of key entry points to foster synergies between the Rio Conventions

• Elaborated thinking of synergy-building at a larger scale, such as synergies across multilateral environmental agreements (MEAs)

• Enhanced engagement with the Rio Conventions Joint Capacity-building Programme
