Capacity-building is fundamental to enhancing climate action and sustainable development. Our dedicated capacity-building initiatives and projects focus on empowering stakeholders, fostering collaboration, and building the necessary skills and knowledge to address climate change effectively.
PCCB Focus Area 2025
The PCCB annually focuses on a more specific topic or theme to enhance technical exchange and stay informed about the latest developments, successes, and challenges in capacity-building. In 2025, it has designated its focus area to Capacity-building for holistic investment strategies, bankable projects, and stakeholder engagement to strengthen the implementation of Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) and National Adaptation Plans (NAPs) in developing countries. Different activities in this thematic area are planned to support mobilising and scaling finance; enhance skills and knowledge around accessing climate finance; and strengthen institutional capacities.
Durban Forum
The Durban Forum on Capacity-building is an annual event organised under the Subsidiary Body for Implementation (SBI). It brings together stakeholders to discuss and review the effectiveness of capacity-building activities. The Forum aligns its themes with the PCCB's annual focus area, providing valuable input to the PCCB's work. It provides a platform for sharing experiences, best practices, and lessons learned in capacity-building.
Capacity-building Hub
The Capacity-building Hub is a dynamic platform established during COP24 in Katowice. It serves as a space for representation and collaboration among a wide array of stakeholders involved in capacity-building activities. The Hub hosts annual sessions alongside COP meetings, bringing together experts, scholars, and activists to share knowledge, foster co-learning, and enhance the impact of capacity-building efforts.
PCCB Network
The PCCB Network is a voluntary association of stakeholders engaged in climate-related capacity-building. It fosters global collaboration, shares good practices, and enhances coherence and coordination in capacity-building efforts. Network members can propose activities, participate in events, and access a wealth of resources to support their capacity-building initiatives. The PCCB Network aims to amplify the impact of capacity-building work and facilitate effective partnerships.
Youth for Capacity
Youth4Capacity is a programme dedicated to strengthening the capacities of young people, recognizing their crucial role as agents of change in climate action. Supported by the UNFCCC and the Italian Ministry of Environment and Energy Security, Youth4Capacity provides hands-on training, fosters peer-to-peer learning, and promotes the active exchange of experiences and lessons learned. It aims to empower youth to contribute effectively to climate action and sustainable development.
CAPACITY Fellowship Programme
The CAPACITY Fellowship Programme aims to build local professional expertise and enhance the capacity of Small Island Developing States (SIDS) and Least Developed Countries (LDCs) to address climate change challenges. This fellowship offers mid-career professionals the opportunity to work and receive training within the UNFCCC Secretariat in Bonn for one year (up to two years). Fellows gain practical skills, high-quality mentorship, and contribute to innovative analytical work on global climate challenges.
Rio Conventions Joint Capacity-building Programme
The Rio Conventions Joint Capacity-building Programme is a collaborative initiative by the secretariats of the UNFCCC, the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), and the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD). This programme aims to strengthen capacities to enhance synergies between climate actions, biodiversity conservation, and sustainable land management. It promotes integrated planning, policy development, and cross-sectoral collaboration to achieve the objectives of the three Rio Conventions and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
Capacity-building Portal
The Capacity-building Portal is an online platform that showcases a range of tools, projects, courses, and other resources to enhance the capacity of developing countries to respond to climate change. It provides access to information on various topics, including adaptation, mitigation, climate finance, and more.
