This side event, organized by the Executive Committee of the Warsaw International Mechanism for Loss and Damage, aims to facilitate insightful thinking on features of financial instruments and innovative ways for collaboration and partnerships to enhance action and support for addressing the risks of slow onset events.

Summary note (1205 kB) of side event

Questions for panel discussion:

  • In the future, what features would financial instruments have to have so that efforts to address risks of loss and damage can be supported?

  • Risks of loss and damage may exceed national capacity or boundary. How can we work together to enhance support for countries' efforts?

What are you doing to address the risks of slow onset events?

6 - 9 NOVEMBER 2017 | 9:00 - 18:30
BONN ZONE

Slow onset events, which include increasing temperatures, rising sea levels, ocean acidification, loss of biodiversity, desertification, land and forest degradation, glacial retreat and salinization, occur gradually as a result of climate change. Because they occur over a long period of time, they can be challenging to address. If left unaddressed, however, they can lead to loss and damage.

In an effort to raise awareness of slow onset events and innovative ways to address them, the Executive Committee of the Warsaw International Mechanism for Loss and Damage is organizing a photo campaign leading up to the side event on risk financing for slow onset events taking place at the UN Climate Change Conference in Bonn, Germany. At the conference, be sure to stop by our photo booth in the Bonn Zone where we will take a photo of you and your answer to the question above to share on social media using #ActOnSOEs, #COP23 and @UNFCCC. If you cannot attend the conference, check out the video below to find out how you can participate from anywhere in the world.

Photos and responses collected during the campaign will be featured at the side event on 9 November.
