Press conference at June UN Climate Meetings

The UNFCCC Secretariat has established guidelines for admitted observer organizations on how to book press conferences during official sessions.

The purpose of these guidelines is to ensure that all admitted observers have a fair opportunity to make use of the limited number of press conference slots to communicate their messages to the media, while also maintaining the orderly flow of press conference activities. They outline:

  • the procedures for requesting a press conference slot,
  • the selection process,
  • the criteria for eligibility,
  • operational rules for the use of press conference rooms.

Clear and accessible rules help promote efficient scheduling and support the broader goal of transparent and multi-stakeholder communication to media on climate action during critical international negotiations.

Guidelines are published and can be viewed and downloaded here

Timeline for submitting booking requests for SB 62:

  • Opening of press conference application: 19.05.2025

Media-accreditation

To improve accreditation processing times, the UNFCCC is changing its media registration system for June Climate Meetings (SBs) and COPs.

The purpose of this system is to establish media focal points from each media organization who will assign their personnel to cover SBs or COPs, and submit one verification document on behalf of all assigned personnel.

NEW ACCREDTIATION MODEL FOR SBs AND COPs

This new model includes the following elements:

1. Submission:

  • Media focal points register using the INDICO UN platform and submit an application, including the list of assigned media personnel.
  • Assigned media personnel will continue to apply for accreditation through our Online Registration System (ORS) system using only their personal details. The submission of letters of assignment or additional documentation in ORS applications is no longer needed.

If media focal points wish to cover the event, they must also register in ORS.

2. Confirmation:

  • The media focal point will receive confirmation if their application is approved, or if more information is needed.
  • Assigned media personnel will be approved automatically after their media focal point’s application has been approved and will receive confirmation.

This is the first step towards further automation, and we appreciate your cooperation in helping improve our service.

To reduce processing times:

Do not submit an Indico application until all of the assigned personnel from your organization have applied through ORS.

Please make sure that all assigned personnel and the media focal point use the exact same spelling and capitalization for the “Nominator” category on their ORS and Indico application respectively.

  • For example, if the Indico application has “NBC” as the nominator, ORS applications with “National Broadcasting Corporation” may not be processed.

Media accreditation is strictly reserved for media professionals (print, photo, radio, television, film, news agencies and online media) who represent a bona fide media organization formally registered as a media organization in a country recognized by the United Nations General Assembly.

Applications are considered on a case-by-case basis. The UN Climate Change secretariat reserves the right to deny or withdraw accreditation of journalists from media organizations whose activities run counter to the principles of the Charter of the United Nations, or who abuse the privileges so extended or put the accreditation to improper use or act in a way not consistent with the principles of the Organization.

Accreditation is required for all media who wish to cover UN Climate Change meetings.

The secretariat does not accept accreditations via any other channel (e-mail, post, etc.).  Any accreditation materials not sent through the online system will not be processed.

Please check carefully to ensure that all documents meet requirements and that applicant details are consistent throughout the application.

Please monitor your ORS account in case further documentation or information is needed to process your application. Once your application is confirmed you will receive a Registration Acknowledgement Form

Any inquiries should be communicated through your online registration account or directed to press@unfccc.int.

Please note that applying for accreditation does not guarantee registration. The secretariat may, at any time and for safety and security reasons, put measures in place to manage the number of accredited media who are able to attend the conference.

If you have received the confirmation of your accreditation, you will be registered for the conference.

Print out the Registration Acknowledgement Form and bring it with you to the conference (alternatively you can show Registration Acknowledgement Form at the registration desk from your mobile device).

You may collect your badge on-site at the media registration desk at the conference venue. Registration usually opens the weekend before the meeting starts.

Your photo will be taken at the registration station; it is not necessary to send a photo in advance.

You must present the same valid photo ID you have used in your ORS profile.

Step by Step Guide for Media Focal Points (INDICO UN platform)
The Letter of Assignment (LoA) should include the following categories

Media personnel don’t need to submit any documentation with their ORS applications.

Please be sure to use the exact name and spelling (including capitalization) of the nominator across ORS and Indico.

For example, if the Indico application has “NBC” as the nominator, ORS applications with “National Broadcasting Corporation” may not be processed.

Once all your assigned media personnel have applied through ORS, please submit your media focal point application.

You will be asked to upload the documentation that you have prepared in Step 1.

If your application is approved, you will receive a confirmation email.

Applications submitted via ORS whose details match the information in the letter of assignment submitted by the media focal point will be automatically approved.

If changes need to be made to the list of assigned media personnel, please contact our team at press@unfccc.int.

Step by Step Guide for applications through ORS

UNFCCC Online Registration System (ORS) is an instrument that supports the nomination of participants for the UNFCCC sessions.

It allows each individual seeking accreditation as media to create a personal account, enter personal data and upload required information. The status of the requested accreditation will also be available through the system.

Accreditation online is the official channel to obtain registration for the media for a conference or event. The secretariat does not accept accreditations via any other channel.

All media must be accredited for each conference or event; previous approved accreditations do not apply.

Media representatives who have previously been duly accredited to UNFCCC conferences will be able to retrieve their personal data by logging into their ORS account and uploading a new letter of assignment and copy of a valid press card, if it has expired since the last conference.

Your accreditation will rely on the application submitted by your focal point which should have your name and details included. You will receive an individual confirmation letter if your application is approved. Any inquiries should be communicated through your online registration account or directed to press@unfccc.int.

Go to the Online Registration System (ORS)

Look on the top left corner for options to either login or create an account.

If you are using ORS for the first time, you need to request an account creation and will receive an e-mail with the confirmation link.

Please follow the link and finish the account creation procedure.

For the user account information must be as it appears in the passport or other official photo identification document which the participant intends to present at the registration desk:

  • Complete name as it appears on official photo identification
  • Date of birth
  • Nationality
  • Passport or other photo identification number (driver’s license, etc.)
  • Email address

You will receive another e-mail with your login name, password and further instructions. The online system recognizes only valid e-mail addresses.

If you already have an account, log in with your e-mail address and password.

In the upper right-hand corner of the screen, select SB64 as the current meeting.

Input your personal details and click on "Submit application"

  • Please note that you will not have to submit individual letters of assignment or press cards as in previous years.
  • To avoid any delays, please also be sure that the “nominator” category (the name of your media organization) on your ORS application is filled out exactly as the “nominator” category in your focal point’s Indico application

Privacy Policy

The names and information entered are for purposes of identification and verification only. Required information is used for accreditation and statistical purposes and will not be published for general access. This information will be retained in the system for use at future sessions, unless a written request to remove it is received from the media concerned.

Letters of assignment and copies of press cards are not retained.  For each meeting a new letter of assignment must be submitted and copy of a valid press card, if it has expired since the last meeting.

Press-conferences

Press conferences at UN Climate Change meetings

During UN Climate Change meetings, Parties and admitted observer organizations are encouraged to hold press conferences. The UN Climate Change Press Office oversees press conferences bookings.

During the June Climate Meetings (SBs), all press conferences are held in a single press conference room. Consequently, priority for booking is given to briefings by Parties and the UN Climate Change Secretariat.

The timeline for submitting press conference room booking requests for SB 64 will be published soon.

All Parties, UN organizations, Intergovernmental Organizations (IGOs) duly admitted by the COP and Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) duly admitted by the COP can only apply for a press conference slot if they wish to hold one.

The list of admitted NGOs can be found here. The list of admitted IGOs can be found here.

Current applicants for admission and provisionally admitted organizations are not eligible to apply for a press conference slot.

For information on the admission process for observer organizations, please click here.

Press conference rooms booking requests for SB 64 should be submitted through this designated form: https://forms.gle/XiuRGEaXij1B4x32A.

There is no fee associated with the use of the press conference room.

Press conferences are booked under the name of the requesting organization, and at least one representative of the organization must be present to lead or moderate the session for accountability reasons.

All press conferences are webcast live and made available on-demand. They are accessible to the public through the Schedule of Events page and the UN Climate Change mobile application.

A laptop and projector are available in the press conference room. Presentations must be provided directly to the technical team on site prior to the start of the press conference.

The press conference room is configured in a theatre-style seating arrangement, featuring a head table equipped with microphones.

Each press conference is allotted a maximum of 30 minutes. As press conferences are scheduled back-to-back, it is essential that the time limit is strictly observed.

Food and beverages are not permitted inside the press conference room.

Participants are responsible for supplying their own nameplates and for organizing any interpretation services needed for their press conference.

Participants are responsible for creating their own media distribution lists and informing the media of their press conferences.

UN Climate Change staff will make media advisories and other information available to accredited press through our designated page.

Media advisories and press releases submissions can be made through this designated form (direct link: https://forms.gle/7rDv9BMvZpgbUvVu9).

Kindly make your submission only as a link to a website where your materials are available.
