NAP Expos are organized at the global level and at the regional levels. Regional NAP Expos are aimed at promoting greater interaction among countries and enhancing collaboration between countries and various actors and stakeholders at the regional levels.

The regional NAP Expo at the Third Inter-ministerial Conference On Health And Environment In Africa (IMCHE3) will be held on the second day of the conference on 7 November 2018. The event will be held at 13:00 to 14:00 as a plenary session. It is being organized in collaboration with the World Health Organization.

Given the significance of the effort to reduce vulnerability to the impacts of climate change, by building adaptive capacity and resilience; and to facilitate the integration of climate change adaptation into development, the proposal to hold a side event at the 3rd Session of the Inter-ministerial Conference for Health and Environment (IMCHE) will raise awareness on the significance of formulation and implementation of NAPs.

OBJECTIVES

The overall objective of the NAP Expo is to advance the formulation and implementation of NAPs. Specific objectives are as follows:

  1. To offer the IMCHE3 participants latest updates on NAPs and their overall significance in achieving national sustainable development;
  2. To promote a common understanding of the contribution of sectors (health in this case), in the broader NAPs, and links to nationally determined contributions (NDCs);
  3. To offer a platform for the participants to share experience, best practices, lessons learned, gaps and needs in relation to climate change adaptation on health in the context of national adaptation planning;
  4. To promote integrated approaches to adaptation planning at the national level.

Session 1: Latest developments in the process to formulate and implement NAPs

The process to formulate and implement National Adaptation Plans (NAPs) is the main vehicle for adaptation planning and implementation at the national level. It enables countries to identify medium- and long-term adaptation needs, and to develop and implement strategies and programmes to address those needs. Its objectives are: (i) to reduce vulnerability to the impacts of climate change, by building adaptive capacity and resilience; and (ii) to facilitate the integration of climate change adaptation into development. These objectives are mirrored in the global goal on adaptation under the Paris Agreement.

The LEG will provide an overview of UNFCCC guidance for NAPs and on latest methodologies and tools developed by the LEG and the NAP technical working group to guide countries to formulate and implement their NAPs. The session will also include an overview of latest science, approaches and tools on climate change and health.
