Boosted by a strong solar photovoltaic (PV) market, renewables accounted for almost two-thirds of net new power capacity around the world in 2016, with almost 165 gigawatts coming online. A new report from the International Energy Agency shows that new solar PV capacity increased by 50% last year, largely as a result of booming solar PV deployment in China and beyond, driven by sharp cost reductions and policy support.
