In the Climate Photo of the week, photojournalist Sean Hawkey captures the struggle of the people of Nicaragua who are living with a long lasting drought which is currently affecting the whole Central American region. In this photo taken in August 2014, Nicaraguan Arnulfo José Espinoza Gonzalez is hauled up with a rope from a well he is seeking to extend. Most wells in San Francisco Libre area have dried up, and those with water left have to be deepened.

In February of this year, the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) expressed concern about the impact the “severe and prolonged” drought in four Central American countries has on food security across the region. More than 2 million people in Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras and Nicaragua are in need of food assistance following the prolonged dry spell during last year's crop cycle.
