The Technology Executive Committee (TEC) in collaboration with the UNEP-CCC is hosting an side event at the Bonn Climate Change Conference 2023 on
Technology Needs Assessment event with financial actors
This roundtable aims to raise awareness of TNA results, including technology action plans (TAPs), and to facilitate discussions amongst the TNA stakeholders and financial actors.
Background and objectives
Background
To achieve the objectives of the Paris Agreement, implementation of climate technologies is necessary on a large scale and in short time. Technology Needs Assessments (TNA) of developing countries provide an opportunity to determine and communicate their climate mitigation and adaptation technology needs, and develop technology action plans (TAPs) to meet those needs. The TNA methodology is a mature process under the UNFCCC, which follows a participatory and country-driven approach and has evolved over about two decades.
In its rolling work plan for 2023–2027, the TEC agreed to facilitate the undertaking and updating of TNAs, as well as enhancing the implementation of their results, including through conducting a gap assessment exercise and engaging with financial actors.
Objectives
The objective of this side event is to raise awareness of TNA results, including technology action plans (TAPs), and to facilitate discussions amongst the TNA stakeholders and financial actors.
The event will:
- provide an opportunity for sharing best practices and success stories in financing and implementing TNAs and TAPs, and for identifying challenges and opportunities for technology development and transfer in the context of the Paris Agreement. The event will also contribute to building capacity and institutional strengthening to support the implementation of TNAs and TAPs;
- showcase examples of successful mitigation and adaptation activities undertaken by developing countries, and share examples of linking TNAs with NDCs;
- bridge political goals with the climate technology ambitions of developing countries, including SIDS and LDCs, with a view to enhancing the implementation of climate mitigation and adaptation technology projects in these countries;
- target the TNA community, financial actors, including the private sector, multilateral development banks, and other financial institutions. Other participants will include representatives of Parties, academia, NGOs, and civil society.
