Background

The first Global Stocktake (GST1) calls for urgent, incremental, transformational and country-driven adaptation action considering national circumstances.

With challenges in implementing transformational adaptation for countries with significant capacity constraints, strengthening regional and international cooperation should be catalyzed to scale up action and support for adaptation.

Anchored on the latest science, the GST and the UAE Framework on Global Climate Resilience, this side event will showcase transformational adaptation in Asia Pacific implemented by various regional stakeholders.

The session included presentations on case studies and perspectives of government, scientific institutions, implementing partners and financiers, and implementers towards transformational adaptation in the region.

Objectives

This side event aimed to:

  • Foster greater understanding and collaboration
  • Promote effective and scalable transformational adaptation solutions through innovative approaches and regional best practices

Key takeaways:

  • Transformational adaptation happens in different contexts, dimensions and scale. It may be part of the process, outcomes or impacts, and may come in the form of policies, enabling mechanisms, or actual programs that are sustainable and promote system-change. It requires integration in development plans, tailored to the needs of communities.

  • Regional examples of transformational adaptation include the 2050 Blue Pacific Strategy which provides a programmatic approach in implementing climate action through subregional cooperation, and initiatives like those in the Mekong subregion led by the Stockholm Environment Institute in developing understanding on transformational adaptation among key players– governments, partners and stakeholders. Climate finance supports local resilience through social protection systems, trust funds and system-level changes.

  • Inclusivity is key to transformational adaptation. The session emphasized the need for better representation of indigenous peoples, youth and local communities in climate processes including in National Adaptation Plan (NAP) formulation and implementation. Strengthening capacity, incorporating traditional knowledge, and ensuring transparency and accountability are crucial for meaningful engagement.
