Article 6.2 Ambition Dialogue

What is Article 6.2 Ambition Dialogue?

The Article 6.2 Ambition Dialogue aims to allow Parties to engage in peer-to-peer discussions outside of the formal negotiation setting on fundamental questions regarding the role and function of Article 6.2 cooperative approaches to delivering on the ambition of the Paris Agreement. To this end, the dialogue seeks to provide a platform for Parties and non-Party stakeholders involved in Article 6 to discuss the following:

  • How Article 6.2 allows for higher ambition in NDCs or other climate targets;
  • How these cooperative approaches align with and support the goals of the Paris Agreement; and
  • What challenges exist in participating in Article 6.2 cooperative approaches and what capacity-building support is needed to address them.

Procedural background

In accordance with paragraph 56 of decision 4/CMA.6, the CMA has requested the UNFCCC secretariat to organize a dialogue among interested participating Parties and observers. This dialogue, which is part of the capacity-building programme mentioned in decision 2/CMA.3, paragraph 12(b), aims to facilitate the exchange of information and experiences on how cooperative approaches support ambition. The dialogue takes place in conjunction with each session of the Subsidiary Body for Implementation (SBI).

Draft Concept Note.

Further information will be published here as it becomes available.

The inaugural Article 6.2 Ambition Dialogue, held during SB 62, provided a platform to explore how Article 6 can enhance ambition and cooperation. This was particularly in the context of Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs), efforts beyond NDCs, and voluntary climate commitments. The Dialogue also focused on issues of benefit-sharing and fairness in cooperative approaches, as well as identifying the capacity-building support and multilateral cooperation needed to address ongoing challenges.
