On methodologies, indicators, data and metrics, monitoring and evaluation

The third workshop under the GGA work programme took place on 17–18 October 2022 in a hybrid format, with the in-person element taking place in Cairo, Egypt. The theme of the third workshop is ‘Methodologies, indicators, data and metrics, monitoring and evaluation’, and builds upon the themes of the first and second workshops to achieve the objectives of the work programme as outlined at CMA.3.

The first day of the workshop examined how other multilateral review mechanisms function under related conventions, processes and frameworks, and their journeys in setting baselines and defining goals.

On the second day, participants shared experience in using various indices, metrics and approaches for assessing the state of adaptation and setting goals used at the regional, national and local level. Matters related to support and monitoring and evaluation and indicators at the regional, national and local level were also discussed as a cross-cutting theme.

Theme 1 – Global perspective: global level targets and indicators
UNFCCC: Secretariat presentation on the compilation and synthesis of indicators, approaches, targets and metrics
UNDRR: Sendai Framework targets and monitoring – Generating official statistics for disaster risk reduction
IPCC: Concepts, approaches and indicators to guide adaptation
WMO: Extreme events and SDGs
FAO: Essential SDG metrics to assess progress towards the GGA with a focus on the agriculture sectors
UNSD: Global set of climate change statistics and indicators and recent methodological developments in measuring climate change vulnerability and adaptation
