UN Climate Change News, 9 July 2025 – At the June Climate Meetings (SB62) in Bonn, UN Climate Change carried out a series of activities to advance global climate transparency. With the Paris Agreement’s Enhanced Transparency Framework (ETF) now fully operational, the UN Climate Change #Together4Transparency initiative continued to strengthen reporting capacity and boost collaboration to advance climate ambition.
“Strong climate reporting is a vital enabling tool for governments and economies," said UN Climate Change Executive Secretary Simon Stiell. "It helps build a stronger evidence base to strengthen climate policies and outcomes. It also helps to identify funding needs and investment opportunities, thus enabling countries to seize the huge benefits of shifting to clean energy and climate resilient economies.”
Strategic Engagement and Outreach
During the June Climate Meetings, the #Together4Transparency team spoke to more than 100 delegates who visited its stand at the SB62 venue, offering advice on transparency needs. The initiative also expanded its digital network, with 700 new members joining the UN Climate Change Transparency LinkedIn group.
Transparency also remained a focus of the collaboration between the COP29 and COP30 Presidencies. The COP29 Presidency hosted an event reaffirming its commitment to help countries strengthen their transparency systems, while COP30 CEO Ana Toni encouraged registration on the Global Climate Action Portal during a COP30 Presidency event.
The #Together4Transparency programme featured multiple events showcasing practical steps to advance transparency:
- COP29 Presidency Event: Outlined plans for the Baku Global Climate Transparency Platform, positioning it as a driver for ETF implementation in 2025. Representatives from Guyana, Kenya and Spain shared best practices, while other countries shared insights from their national experiences.
- REDD+ Community of Practice Launch: Introduced a new peer-exchange platform to scale up REDD+ implementation, supported by the United Kingdom and featuring expert meetings, webinars, and e-learning courses.
- Consultative Group of Experts (CGE) Side Event: Led discussions on navigating first Biennial Transparency Reports (BTRs), underscoring the importance of ETF implementation and tailored CGE support for developing countries.
- Youth Workshop: Run in collaboration with the Youth4Capacity initiative, the workshop highlighted youth roles in advancing transparency. Nathan Cogswell of the World Resources Institute (WRI) said: “There is a role for everyone in climate transparency – we just need to find ours.”
- ACE Gallery Poster: Presented a poster highlighting stakeholder engagement in transparency implementation, with a focus on youth.
- Workshop on First BTRs: Brought together Parties and implementing agencies to share experiences and guidance on preparing the first BTRs, informing future negotiations and emphasizing the importance of accessible support.
- Updates on the ETF: Delivered updates on ETF reporting tools, the completed Technical Expert Reviewers training programme, and the synthesis report on initial BTR experiences. Parties welcomed progress and stressed the need for continued support and innovation in transparency systems.
Clinics and Training to Strengthen National Capacity
A capacity-building highlight of the June Meetings was six BTR clinics offering tailored, one-on-one support to delegates on all three ETF reporting modules: greenhouse gas inventories, progress on national climate plans (NDCs), finance, technology transfer and capacity-building. Several Parties submitted their reports shortly after the clinics, showing immediate impact.
Hands-on training for technical expert reviewers focused on tracking NDC progress and conducting voluntary adaptation reviews. Participants praised the interactive format, which complemented online learning modules and boosted readiness for real-world reviews.
As the world prepares for COP30, the #Together4Transparency initiative will continue to serve as a platform for collaboration, learning and innovation, keeping transparency at the heart of global climate action.
