UN Climate Change News, 9 March 2020 The professional training programme on the transparency of climate action and support, organized jointly by UN Climate Change (UNFCCC) and the Greenhouse Gas Inventory & Research Center of Korea is now officially open for applications.

The programme seeks to provide professional training on greenhouse gas inventories to national experts from developing countries.

The programme is the first of its kind under the UNFCCC-CASTT initiative on climate action support and transparency training, and is now in its fourth year of operation.

Overall, the comprehensive programme looks to facilitate effective and universal participation of countries in the measurement, reporting and verification arrangements under the UNFCCC and the enhanced transparency framework under the Paris Climate Change Agreement. Its goal is to enhance the technical capacity of individuals and to improve the overall competency in reporting and in contributing to climate action.

Government officials, consultants and researchers in the fields of greenhouse gas emissions, emission reductions or more generally in the response to climate change are encouraged to apply latest by 5 April, 2020.

Selected applicants will be notified by 29 April, the training program will begin on 29 June and run for four weeks in Seoul, the Republic of Korea. Participants will be provided a return ticket from and to their home countries, as well as room and board for the duration of the training.

Background to the training

Since 2017, 91 trainees from 67 countries have successfully completed the training programme, including last year, where 32 students (15 female and 17 male) were selected from a pool of 348 applicants from 84 countries. This programme was a four-week intensive training course, and structured to address the current gaps, which would allow the trainees to undertake national GHG inventories upon their return. Trainees themselves came willing to participate and engage with the group, as well as expressed an eagerness to bring the knowledge learned back to their teams at home.
