Background

This is a critical time as the next round of nationally determined contributions (NDCs) is due in 2025, requiring new and more ambitious NDCs from countries. The Global Stocktake (GST) outcome agreed upon at COP28 underlined that Parties are not yet collectively on track towards achieving the purpose of the Paris Agreement and its long-term goals, and encouraged Parties to come forward with ambitious, economy-wide emission reduction targets, covering all greenhouse gases, sectors and categories and aligned with the 1.5°C limit in their next round of NDCs.

The GST invited organizations in a position to do so and the secretariat, including through its regional collaboration centres (RCCs), to provide capacity-building support for the preparation and communication of the next NDCs. In support of this, the UNFCCC NDC Technical Support Unit (TSU) continues to provide technical advice and support to countries on the preparation, submission, and accounting of NDCs, ensuring compliance with the Paris Agreement. The RCC Caribbean coordinates the regional NDC TSU activities and actively supporting Caribean countries on the preparation of NDCs through collaborative efforts with key partnerships.

Objectives

The overall objective of the webinar series is to build the capacity of the government of St Vincent and the Grenadines in understanding key GST guidance for the NDCs 3.0. The specific objectives are:

  1. To understand the information to facilitate clarity, transparency and understanding (ICTU) requirements of the NDCs 3.0.
  2. To understand the application of the accounting approaches for the NDCs 3.0.
  3. To discuss and identify other areas of support needs of the government of St Vincent and the Grenadines.

Highlights from Webinar Series

The RCC Caribbean organized two technical webinars with representatives of St. Vincent and the Grenadines government to support in understanding the GST guidance for the NDCs 3.0. The webinars provided an overview of the UNFCCC’s RCCs and the Paris Agreement, and discussed the key GST guidance for NDCs 3.0. The first webinar provided specific training on understanding the information to facilitate clarity, transparency and understanding (ICTU) requirements for NDCs 3.0. The second webinar focused on the accounting approaches for NDC 3.0. Additionally, these sessions provided an opportunity to discuss and identify other areas of support needs of the government of St Vincent and the Grenadines.

Outcomes and Next Steps

The government of St Vincent and the Grenadines is now equipped in understanding the GST guidance for NDCs and is better informed to prepare the NDCs 3.0. The RCC Caribbean will continue to provide one-on-one NDC-related trainings to countries in the region based on specific needs.
